Glad to see he's working on at least one of his tools.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Mets shortstop Jose Reyes has been cleared by team doctors to resume baseball activities and is on his way back to Florida.

A team spokesman said Reyes' thyroid levels have returned to normal and he is expected back at Tradition Field on Wednesday.

There was no immediate word on when he'll be able to start playing in Grapefruit League games. Reyes was shut down earlier this month because of an overactive thyroid and has been resting at his home in New York.

The Mets said on March 11 that it could take an additional one to seven weeks for Reyes to be cleared, making it appear likely that he would begin the season on the disabled list. But now it seems possible that he could avoid the DL altogether.

We're expecting to hear from Mets general manager Omar Minaya shortly. Check back here later this afternoon for more on Reyes and when he might play in a game.

Okay, so how long has Jose been idle? About three weeks or so?

With only 13 days until the season starts, I suspect he won't be quite ready, but maybe, if things go well from here, he'll be able to only miss a week or so.

You're probably correct but what does he need to do to get ready? , a young guy like him , he's hardly lost a step or anything like that.

Omar said they won't rule out Opening Day.

Honestly, it's really a timing thing with his swing. He hasn't been out long enough to need more than 2 weeks to be ready in every other way.

And the Mets would have to be insane if Reyes is even only 75% ready not to start him Opening Day instead of Cora. Just the idea of even writing DL next to Reyes name for 3-4 days.

Wait , you want him starting even if he's only three quarters of himself?

I don't know if anyone is ever 100% but I would like Jose to be as close as possible to his full self for him to start.

There's a difference between being 75% ready and 75% healthy.

If he's 75% healthy, I'd let him sit for a few more days. But if he's 75% ready, I'd let him play. I'd rather have 75% Jose Reyes than anyone else they'd put out there.

Definitely. That's what I meant. I don't think there is any doubt he'll be 100% healthy and ready to go though.

but will his timing be right? maybe not, but if he can throw down a bunt, draw a walk, etc, still probably has plenty of value and just the boost of having him healthy and missing 0 games is a huge confidence thing for the team.

He'd lose a lot of blood that way...

My cation is rooted in the notion that healthy and ready aren't 100% distinct from one another.

Sometimes not being ready means the body isn't prepared to take the effort Jose Reyes is going to ask of it. Game-shapiness.

Judging by the tweets from today about Reyes, it doesn't sound like there is much doubt that he'll be in game shape. I think the biggest issue may be his timing, and he hasn't really faced pitching in like 9 months. I would suspect he'd need at least a weeks worth of games (Beltran said he'd need 7-10 games worth), which would mean getting into a game by Sunday.

I just think if he's had 6 games and his timing isn't quite there, I'd rather he get those games in Flushing than in Port St. Lucie.

I think the Mets are saying the right things here , lets take it day by day and let's not commit to anything beyond that, if he's ready to go Opening Day then great.

Just heard on WFAN that he participated in the morning workout and was the fastest in the sprints.
Add running to the list of tools he's checking put.

Jose has been "idle" for 10 months, if Jose wants to make opening day go-time I'm all for it

Mets FO handles injuries without great care or communication? They get crucified.

Mets FO handles injuries with prudence and forbearance and as clear messaging as circumstances allow? They get crucified. Any guesses on who the player is?

PORT ST. LUCIE Just call this show Everybody Loves Reyes.

Except that many Mets players arent laughing as the organization tries to decide whether Jose Reyes should be part of the teams Opening Day roster.

On a day Reyes appeared in a minor league exhibition game against the Cardinals his most extensive action since returning last Wednesday from an overactive thyroid one Mets player told The Post there is a prevailing feeling in the clubhouse that the shortstop is being babied because the organization fears a potential public relations hit should the shortstop reinjure his hamstring.

The player said Reyes belongs in the starting lineup for Mondays season-opener against the Marlins.

Its kind of silly, the player said. You play the game. You can get hurt as easily playing [a minor league exhibition] as playing on Opening Day.

The Mets hierarchy might disagree as it continues to take the safe route in Reyes recovery after he spent 2 1/2 weeks on his couch resting until his thyroid levels returned to normal. The teams greatest fear is Reyes will rush back and suffer a recurrence of the right hamstring problems that shelved him for most of last season.

Jose might be ignoring the team on how much or how hard to run, but they put him on the minor league field to try to control stuff like that a little, and it's hard to find fault in that (sez me). A little extra care in ST ain't bad. To the anonymous yapping player, "Shut it."

The guy just tore around first and dove into second base. It's 100% true that he's just as likely to get injured in a minor league game. It's 100% a timing of his swing decision, and just activate him already will ya?
