It's not just the number of games lost, it's the pct of salaries eaten up by the DL.
29% of total payroll in the Mets' case (no one else looks all that close) - most of which was obviously a result of the long-term absences of Reyes, Beltran & Delgado.

Santanny's got to be a meaningful piece of that also. Only five weeks but still.

and yet, our "on the field" salary was still like 4th highest in the majors.

the phillies payroll was $113M, and they lost $11.5M to injury, leaving them with an on-the-field salary of $102M
the mets payroll was $149.4M, and they lost $43.7M to injury, leaving them with an on-the-field salary of $105.7M

looked at in that fashion, the season kindof hurts extra.

Interesting. I wonder how that $43,734,000 (geez that's a lot of money) breaks down?

What was Putz's salary? That probably amounts to a decent chunk of it, since he missed most of the season.

Wagner also. I too am curious as to the breakdown.

Putz - $6 million
Delgado - $12 million
Reyes - $6.125 million
Beltran - $19 million +
Santana - $18 million +
Wagner - $10.5

Who else?

Oliver Perez.

Also, a couple of weeks of David Wright.

We'd then have to prorate those amounts by number of days missed, add them up, and see how close we are to the $43 million.

EDIT: Also, John Maine missed a lot of time, but his salary wouldn't be in the neighborhood of those other guys.

Lots else.

Let's do this together. I'll figure out Wagner.

He was activated August 20. Wagner made $10,500,000. The Mets had played 120 games through that date. $10,500,000 X (120/162) = $7,777,777.78.

Boom.

Carlos Voltron: Deactivated June 22. Cleared to play September 8. Missed 64 games (including three games missed pre-DL stint, not including "rest" games after his return).

64/162 x 18.5M* = $7,308,642 (or, if 19.5M, $7,602,443)

*Low estimate, as per Cots.

Also, I didn't realize we were taking this to the penny, so I had shorted Delgado by 33 cents and Reyes by 68 cents. That's been fixed, above.

In addition to the players listed above, these Mets also spent time on the DL in 2009:

Angel Pagan, Tim Redding, Alex Cora, Ryan Church, Ramon Martinez, Fernando Martinez, Jon Niese, Fernando Nieve, and Gary Sheffield.

Putz earned $6,000,000 but last pitched on 6/4/09 leaving the Mets with 110 games without his services. (110/162)(6,000,000)= $4,074,074.07

Santana earned $18,876,139 but last pitched on 8/20/09 leaving the Mets with 41 games without his services. (41/162)(18,876,139)= $4,777,294.44

Fernando Nieve called up June 5. They had 52 games behind them and 110 games left. But his contract was a major league one when he was claimed off waivers, so I think the whole season counts toward their payroll.

So, he's paid $414,000. He goes down July 19. KaBOOM! went his thigh. The Mets had played 91 games at that point and had 71 left $414,000 x 71/162 = $181,444.44.

If you don't buy that, and think only the salary he got after his callup counts against Met payroll, well, it doesn't matter, because all his injury time does, injured as he was while on the big league roster..

Ryan Church is a little tricky (but not very) due to the trade. At a salary of 2.8 million, he was traded between games on July 9th and July 11th, meaning he was present for 67 of the team's 162 games, for a Mets salary of $1,158,024.60. He missed 13 games between May 22nd and June 7th, leaving the Mets with $224,691.35 lost to his injury.

Edit: messed up the Mets salary at first, but the result is the same.

David Wright missed 15 games between August 15th and September 1st. At a salary of $7.5 million, this missed time amounts to $694,444.44 in sunk cash.

Alex Cora spent two stints on the DL, missing 13 games in late May and then the final 48 games of the season.
So he was DL'd for 61 of 162 games (or .37654321 of the season) which, at a salary of $2mil, means $753,086.42 of lost salary

Fernando Martinez was called up on 6/22 in time for game 45 of the season
He was then DL'd after game 79 - meaning he was available for just 35 games (inclusively) of the possible 117 he was on a ML roster at the minimum pay of $400K/year. So missing 82 of 117 games means .7008547 x $400,000 = $280.341.88 of squandered payroll
