Just goes to show what $2 million per win can buy you. Three (maybe one and a half reliable) starters, one great (maybe greatest of all time) closer, an All-Star infield and a pedestrian outfield, supported by capable fill-ins.
And a very classy guy who now only bats, and does that very well. Matsui is the only Yankee I actually like. He seems to conduct himself very professionally, both on and off the field. He will be a free agent at the end of the season. If his knees were well enough to play the outfield I'd be all for the Mets signing him. Alas, they aren't.

So I go to bed last night with a Facebook posting of "Edgy DC congratulates the Yankees and their fans." I guess it was partly as a pre-emptive strike at trash-talking and chest-thumping and shit I knew was coming. It was also in part an attempt to model the behavior I was hoping for.

Unanticipated by me was that Phillie Phans would be reading also. Phllie Phanatic Rusty, a friend you might recall from the "A Propos of Jill Carroll" thread, ends up using my wall to mix it up with Chris, a YLDB from junior high whose friend request I should have ignored. So, by this afternoon, there's a 20-post thread on my freaking wall. So I write Rusty, and let him know, you know, he's not dealing with the guy who brings the potato salad to the Mensa picnics, or is even particularly rational, judging from his FB posts, and maybe he's not worth Rusty's time.

Rusty comes back at me at 100 miles per hour.

Well. Edgy, I think it's over and the tone was generally jovial and if I can make just one Yankees fan have to defend himself and the dark organization he roots for, especially at the time when he should've been celebrating, then the world is a little more just, a little less evil. One of my facebook friends --- none of my friends are Yankees fans, I have to point out, neither are they Klansmen nor Neo-Nazi skinheads --- was at the game last night. He reported that there was none of the celebration, the catharsis (for example crying, which believe me, happened in Philly last year... and included me) and that the crowd was more like the spoiled kid who at Xmas tears opens his presents... the presents he knew he was getting... just to make sure all the pieces are in place, that there are no defects, that all is right with the universe. Obviously last year was an enormous release for this city... so much so that I don't even really hurt today, as least not in the way I expected to hurt... which accounts for some, but not all, of the difference in respective fan reactions to a Series victory. So what and who else will you next congratulate on facebook?: "Edgy DC congratulates testicular cancer and its attendent paraneoplastic effects for first taking the dignity and then the life of Joey Capitolo. Way to go!"

One nice thing about living in the south is that I did not once today have to hear anyone gloating about (or even mentioning) the Yankees World Series victory. I did not (amazingly) see a single Yankees hat or any other paraphenalia of the pinstriped menace. So, it was almost as if it never happened, which is fine with me.

There are a significant number of bandwagon Yankee fans in the area, but either I was fortunate enough not to encoutnter any of them today or they simply don't care enough to celebrate their team's victory. Either way, it was as enjoyable a morning after as I could have possibly hoped for.

Wow. That's the first good reason I've ever heard for living where you live.

The YLDBs were out in droves today and ALL of them felt the need to mention something to me. Yes, I'm wearing a Mets jacket. Yes, I know the MFYs won. Now go eat a stick of dynamite.
