Though you may try to believe, we all have to admit that faith has been an uphill battle, and steadily growing steeper. So I inquire which relatively innocuous electronic statement most leads your head to tell your heart to go to bed, that the Mets aren't going to be victors this eve.

"The starting pitcher tonight, Livan Hernandez."

"Jerry's heading to the mound --- looks like he's going to make a change."

"The pitch count is up around a hundred."

"Looks like Jerry's going to the five-man infield alignment."

Each of these deflates the hell out of me.

This is a hard team to root for, and not just because of the losses. Injuries are a perfectly accpetable excuse for most losses but the uninspired play on the field is rubbing off on fandom. If it looked like they were consistently hustling and busting it, and playing sound ball, and there were still tough losses, I could live with that -- I'd accept it and appreciate it. But that isn't happening. Sloppy play and a general lack of any get-up-and-go, makes this a tough team to watch. To boot, a great number of these guys aren't even Mets. They're wearing the uniform but in many cases will only be remembered as Mets through sites like this or UMDB. This squad has no real identity or character. Maybe that's part of it. What's most depressing to me maybe is the crushing realization that we not only had a full season from Delgadio, Beltrran and Reyes last years but excellent seasons form them to boot -- and we still screwed the pooch. This perspective makes me reiterate my forgotten campaign from last year that Omar should be whacked.

This is a hard team to root for, and not just because of the losses. Injuries are a perfectly accpetable excuse for most losses but the uninspired play on the field is rubbing off on fandom. If it looked like they were consistently hustling and busting it, and playing sound ball, and there were still tough losses, I could live with that -- I'd accept it and appreciate it. But that isn't happening. Sloppy play and a general lack of any get-up-and-go, makes this a tough team to watch. To boot, a great number of these guys aren't even Mets.
