SCHAEFER METS PLAYER AND PITCHERS OF THE MONTH, JULY 2009

The Schaefer Mets Player and Pitcher of the Month for July 2009 is JOHAN SANTANA. This is the sixth time that Santana has been Pitcher of the Month, and the fourth time that he's also been Player of the Month. In July, Santana was 3-2 in five starts, with a 1.82 ERA in 34.2 innings. His ERA led the team, and his 24 strikeouts and 3 wins tied Mike Pelfrey for the club lead. (Pelfrey had one more start than Santana, pitching 35.1 innings over 6 starts with a 4.84 ERA.)

July's leading position player is Luis Castillo. Luis finished a mere 1.07 points behind Santana in the Player of the Month race, and actually was in the lead prior to Santana's July 30 start. Castillo led the Mets in July with 28 hits, a .368 batting average, a .447 slugging percentage and a .478 OBP, as well as 4 stolen bases. He tied for the club lead in runs scored, 17, with David Wright.

And the Schaefer Mets Relief Pitcher of the Month is BRIAN STOKES. Stokes had a 1.54 ERA in July in 12 games, pitching 11.2 innings. He had no wins, losses, or saves. He finished only slightly ahead of Bobby Parnell, who pitched 10.1 scoreless innings over 12 games, and Sean Green, who had 1 save and a 3.65 ERA in 12.1 innings and 15 games. This is Brian's second win this season (he also won in April) and fourth since he joined the Mets late in the 2008 season.

Woulda been sweet if Castillo had won. Maybe he can humiliate Wright and steal POTY honors from him.

Biggest story of the year, in my opinion, below the boatload of injuries and the Bernazard/Minaya/Rubin fiasco: where the hell did David Wright's power go?

It's actually funny that it hasn't been a bigger issue.

I wonder if Castillo had ever previously slugged .447 over a month in his life.

Like any redblooded Met fan, I enjoy me a Johan start (with a side of Johan double, preferably). That said, his Schaefer wins have started to feel like the house taking down blackjack hands.

Wow. That's pretty repugnant, and-- perhaps worse-- not at all funny or enlightening.

Twice in more or less full months.

August 1999: .450 in 27 games. Also struck out 22 times, which he never again matched.

May 2008: .472 in 22 games. That was the month of his last three homers.

OK, that's kind of disturbing.

Wait until August when the slugging title goes to Santana.
