Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 1) Darryl tried to be an emissary for his church in reaching out to Michael.2) A Mets hat appears in the "Bad" video.3) The joke about wearing one glove for no apparent reason was made about a lot of people, but Ralph Kiner liked to tell it about Dick Stuart.4) Both were conceived in 1958.That's all I've got, other than a similar fondness for Jheri Curl-type notions between him and Gooden. We didn't even get a Shea stop on the Victory Tour.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 I have a vague memory of his music used for the stroll up to the hitters box......I think by a most unexpected player too.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 He had a lifetime 5.31 ERA vs. the Mets in 35 games:http://leaptoad.com/mets/profile.php?PlayerCode=3126Trivia question: What do Mookie Wilson, Jeff Kent, Edgardo Alfonzo, Gary Carter, Dave Gallagher, Tony Tarasco, Joe Orsulak and John Gibbons have in common?Answer: They've never been in Willets Point's kitchen. And they're also the only Mets to homer off Michael Jackson.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 The Mets have employed a Michael (Tucker), a Marlon (Anderson), a Jermaine (Allensworth), and a Tito (Navarro). They're simply drowning in in Randy (Jones, Milligan, Myers, Niemann, Sterling, Tate), but still lack a Jackie, though they've played six Jacks and one Jackson.
Guest sharpie Guests Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 They do have a Jackie Robinson Rotunda.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 When I buy the Mets, I'm going to add a Jackie Gleason Rotunda to the other side of Citi Field. And I'll cover the facade with big blue and orange corrugated metal titles.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 Final day of 1995, the DiamondVision montage of season highlights was set to a medley of Michael Jackson hits; "The Way You Make Me Feel" stands out in memory. That was the year "Scream" came out (the video for which the Mets showed while the Gruccis arranged their fireworks display) on the two-volume HIStory anthology, which was the only reason I could discern for why the Jacko backo catalogue was suddenly so prominent on the Shea PA.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 I knew a document thread like this could bring you out of hiding. Welcome back.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 You can't spend a half-inning with Fman & Son and not go looking for more.Though maybe a Michael Jackson thread isn't the place to express delight at meeting someone known as Fboy...
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 They should do another montage of Michael hits. Only, you know, updated for the situation.- (He just) Beat It- Guess I Can Say Goodbye- I Won't Be There- The Thrill(er's) Gone ... OK, I know that's not his but we can do some covers too

I had to explain to him why it was ok under the circumstances.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 I don't have much on Farrah and the Mets. She was in a shaving cream commercial with Joe Namath. That's, um, something.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 How about a challenge: Find ten photos of Mets wives with Farrah Fawcett hair.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 1977, in Archie, as seen when I was delivering Newsday...MRS. ANDREWS: I think Archie is growing up.MR. ANDREWS: How so?MRS. ANDREWS: Archie took down his poster of the California Angels and put up a poster of Charlie's Angels.Cue sweat beads.Former Met Nolan Ryan pitched for Archie's erstwhile object of affections throughout Farrah Fawcett-Majors' stay with the other Angels.Archie lived in Riverdale, where Willie Mays kept an apartment for many years, including his stint as a Met. Maybe not the same Riverdale.M. Donald Grant and Aaron Spelling both made jughead moves where their franchise player was concerned in 1977 At least Spelling could call up Cheryl Ladd. The Mets often field a lineup that looked like something out of the Farrah Fawcett-Minors. Too many lads on the roster. Before the next season started, Buddy Harrelson was traded to the Phillies for Fred Andrews, who shared a name with Archie's dad but, vis-a-vis Riverdale, probably wasn't the same one.Archie and Mets fans were both regularly annoyed by some upper crust type named Reggie. So, in conclusion, no, not a lot of connection between Farrah and the Mets.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 Well, when Archie Andrews dies, you'll be all set for that thread.
HahnSolo Old-Timey Member Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 Admit it Greg, you've been waiting years to use that Farrah Fawcett-Minors line, haven't you?

Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted July 4, 2009 Posted July 4, 2009 Karl Malden played the father of future-Met Jimmy Piersall in Fear Strikes Out. You don't have a career that long without rubbing up against the Mets somehow, but that's all I've got right now.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted July 4, 2009 Posted July 4, 2009 After getting shelled at Pac Bell in May 2000, Mike Hampton roamed the streets of San Francisco.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 Walter Cronkite's 6/17/1977 news broadcast opened with his report that the Russians had a new president, a Mr. Brezhnev. He hit elections in Spain, riots in South Africa --- new riot gear and dogs are proving effective! --- and a New York Supreme Court decision that it's not illegal for CBers to warn each other about speed traps, before closing with an item about Tom Seaver being traded to the Reds. He noted that Seaver, Joe Namath, and Julius Erving have all left New York within a year, and he bid America good night. That's the way it was.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 Just discovered: Another murder at the Feline Club. "Now they're killing off the centerfolds." One of the suspects is Victor, who comes on too strong. But according to Jill Monroe's sources, "Of course he's struck out more times than the '62 Mets."See for yourself at approximately 16:15.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 John Hughes protagonists were Cubs people. They weren't Chicagoans so much as residents of lilly-white suburbs of Chicago. But watch Ferris Bueller's Day Off and you'll see Mr. Rooney come upon a baseball game while searching for Ferris. This, in actuality was a June 5, 1985 Braves-Cubs game, and at bat at that moment was then-ex-Met Claudell Washington. That's all that comes to mind with John Hughes and the Mets.Which makes me wonder --- did the Mets get any interesting compensation when the Braves signed away Washington?
dgwphotography Old-Timey Member Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 I love that Terry Blocker has a WHiP of 2.00
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 I love that he has a middle name of "Fennell."
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 Les Paul and Mike Piazza were friends, I think. They took in at least one metal show together.

G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 I hoped for less Paul when we got Siebert.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 I never owned a Gibson Les Paul, but, thanks to Topps, I owned a lot of Paul Gibsons.
