Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 Not over yet. Capps has been shaky this year. Tatis leadoff single and the tying run is on deck.

Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 Well that sucked.I think it would be best for everyone if someone threw JJ Putz into a well a la Baby Jessica, sans rescue.

metirish Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2009 Author Posted June 1, 2009 Horrible loss , no side session is going to fix Putz , the guy must be injured.
Guest Swan Swan H Guests Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 They say Putz' hands are in the wrong position. Unless they are around his throat, I agree.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2009 Posted June 1, 2009 It's deja vu all over again. Don't they know that this is the September game plan?
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2009 Author Posted June 1, 2009 Jeez , Ron and carlin trying to sell us on the idea that Manuel brought Parnell in for the 6th so" the young man wouldn't feel a sense of entitlement " and that "I'm the 8th inning guy"...also Manuel doing that to let his veteran know that " hey your still my guy".........buuuuuuuuuuuullshiiiiiiiiiit

Guest Triple Dee Guests Posted June 2, 2009 Posted June 2, 2009 I am so glad that I missed this travesty of a ballgame.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted June 2, 2009 Posted June 2, 2009 - while most of the blame for this one will come down (and deservedly so) on Putz, do note that we also got no-hit from the 4th inning through Tatis's bloop single in the 9th.Those backup lineups will only take you so far.- and also, why, with 0 outs and a 2-run lead in the top of the 8th, are we wasting one of our 6 remaining outs by bunting Wright's lead-off walk over to 2nd? ... especially when (nice night for Valdez aside) you're bunting w/Reed (2 2Bs himself) into two really weak hitters in Valdez & Schneider.I missed a big chunk of the middle of this game (settling in just in time for the bottom of the 8th) so I can't say I was pissed off about it at the time ... but I am now.

(need a picture of those Guiness idiots)
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted June 2, 2009 Posted June 2, 2009 I was stomping an insect infestation in my house. I tuned in just in time for the bunt, and it made me feel like a loser. That and the insects.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted June 2, 2009 Posted June 2, 2009 One could argue, I suppose, that he did bring in the effective mid-relief guy (Parnell) at the time when 'the real save' might occur: 6th inn, 2-on/2-out, 2-run lead and he got out of it (IF single - K).But if that truly was 'out of the box thinking' then it got steamrolled right afterward when he swapped Parnell out before the next inning (even though he wasn't PH'd for) in favor of Feliciano on account of 4 of the next 5 hitters being LH-swingers. How 'bout letting Parnell fail first - or even look like he might - and then make the switch when it's necessary? Instead, he made the 'by the book' move ahead of time which left him with less to fall back on when one of the later relievers does start to fall apart.
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted June 2, 2009 Posted June 2, 2009 Parnell was certainly brought in at the right time (you could even argue that K-rod, as your "best reliever", belongs in the game there), but he should have been left in for the 8th. The existence of "saves" as a stat that gets counted and emphasized has had a very negative effect on bullpen usage in that it has negated what you'd think would be common sense principles like "use your best guy in what is likely to be the toughest spot" and "don't remove pitchers who are pitching well"
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted June 2, 2009 Posted June 2, 2009 With a two-run lead, yeah, I'd at least let Bobby give up a baserunner.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted June 2, 2009 Posted June 2, 2009 Other than the fact that Putz has been struggliong and was possibly overworked and underconfident, I didn't have a problem with how Jerry played it necessarily. Parnell worked his ass off to get a very big K and you don't wanna blow him out either. Jerry even let Feliciano start the 8th. I would think had JJ begun the hit parade one batter earlier that question would have been asked as well. This was all about Putz not getting done what just about any ML releiever ought to have been able to get done.

I agree in concept that Parnell could have gone longer, but he was in the sixth, not the seventh. The seventh set up really well for Feliciano with two lefties, and he got through it 1-2-3.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted June 2, 2009 Posted June 2, 2009 Parnell, though, had thrown only 11 pitches. And Stokes was another option in the eighth, as was (ta-da!) Rodriguez.I really just don't want Putz in there with a lead of less than four or a defecit of less than three. I want him on the bottom rung climbiing while alligators snap at his heels.

He's also a righty that can throw gas, but he's got much better 2009 (and 2008 for that matter) numbers. Leaves Takahashi as a 2nd lefty/swingman and Putz where he belongs -- out in a field somewhere, being fucked by ten goats, and wondering why a bunch of smart assed Mets forum dorks hate him so much. Tim Redding can keep him company.
