Mets Sign Cory Sullivan

According to Troy Renck of the Denver Post, the Mets have signed outfielder Corry Sullivan, formerly of the Colorado Rockies.

"Cory Sullivan, arguably one of the best defensive center fielders in Rockies' history, has caught on with the Mets, signing a one-year, $600,000 major league deal with $300,000 in incentives. Sullivan was a career .279 hitter with the Rockies in four seasons, splitting time as a starter and reserve beginning in 2005.

Unless there is a trade in the works, I just don't get it. Our bench as it stood was too lefthanded, and too light-hitting. Sullivan is a light-hitting lefthanded reserve outfielder, so he adds to the problem rather than offsets it. Even Pagan hits significantly better from the left side, and he has more going for him than Reed or Sullivan.

And we still don't have a righthanded batter who can spell Church or Delgado against some lefties. To me, that's a big problem.

And speaking of Jeremy Reed (which we sort of are):

I found his name floating around the internet a couple times in the last week or so as several sites are reviewing their 2004 'Best Prospects' lists to see where the hits and misses were.
Reed definitely represents one of the biggest examples of the latter category.


A guy at Rotoworld had him listed as his 4th best prospect 5 years ago.
BP had him at #2 overall!!, BA at 25th.
John Sickels listed him 10th among position players - sandwiched right between D. Wright and Grady Sizemore

A left-handed line-drive hitter with 15-homer power and an outstanding eye at the plate, Reed looks like he could become baseball's best leadoff man someday.

And now:
RW: We were all fooled by the outstanding .373 (combined 2003 minor league) batting average. Baseball America had the best read on him, yet still rated him as the best prospect in the White Sox system. It's incredible that a player this good in the minors hasn't at least become a quality fourth outfielder in the majors.





Still only 27 (28 in June) he's had some decent minor league numbers the last few years in AAA Tacoma but little success during his stints in the majors.
So while it's real unlikely that he'd suddenly "find himself" at this age and become the star that some predicted 5 years ago, it wouldn't be out of the question for the light to go on a bit to where he can thrive in a 4th/5th OFer role better than the likes of Endy, Pagan or whoever else is fighting for that spot.
Can play CF too from what I hear.

Signing a major league deal means Sullivan would probably be subject to being lost via waivers if they eventually wanted to shuffle him off to Buffalo* ... but, if so, big deal. * I believe that's the first official use of this rather obvious joke

We had signed both Endy and Tike Redman to Major League deals and let 'em battle it out in spring training. Redman wound up getting released at the end of spring training but I'm sure they tried to trade him first.
