Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted November 21, 2008 Posted November 21, 2008 Mets added Mike Carp to the 40-man roster making him ineligible to be selected. There was speculation out there they would add 3Bman Shawn Bowman, but they didn't, and presumably had the room to.Draft is usually the first day of the winter meetings. ... Dec. 11
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2008 Posted November 21, 2008 The addition of Carp makes it only 34 slots filled (acc to what I read) so they have LOTS of room to add players via Rule 5, FAs, trades, etc. Some analysis I read a few weeks back opined that the Mets should leave themselves adding room but 6 spots is bigger than I expected.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted November 21, 2008 Posted November 21, 2008 Agreed. Two-three more slots are probably fillable.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2008 Posted November 21, 2008 Can't they still add a few more players between now and December 11? Or was yesterday a deadline of some sort?
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2008 Posted November 21, 2008 (responding to Edgy)Except that the 40-man rosters were frozen as of last night.Any new names to be added at this point will come from outside.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted November 21, 2008 Posted November 21, 2008 Yeah, I got that. I meant more of a a pespective on what they could have done.I guess it means to brace for the impact of a lot of transactions. Prediction: Collazo gets claimed.
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2008 Posted November 21, 2008 I think Collazo is a minor-league free agent at this point. Which I suppose doesn't make it any less likely that he'll be in a different organization next year.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2008 Posted November 21, 2008 So who is on the 40-man ...errr, 34-man roster at this point?DelgadoCastilloReyes x 2WrightCarpSchneiderCastroAndersonChavezMurphyEvansBeltranChurchTatisPagan?SantanaHeilmanMainePelfreyFelicianoSchoeneweisSanchezSmithKunzWagnerMunizNieseBurgos?, Stokes?, Knight?, Vargas?I'm obviously missing some.
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2008 Posted November 21, 2008 I think Robinson Cancel is still on the roster. They have tender/non-tender decisions on Stokes, Vargas, and Burgos. That means they're all currently on the 40, although I see no reason to keep Burgos around. I don't know what Knight's situation is.
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2008 Posted November 21, 2008 Have they put Fernando Martinez on the 40 yet?
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2008 Posted November 21, 2008 As far as I know, Martinez hasn't been signed long enough to need to be protected by being on the 40.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2008 Posted November 21, 2008 I tried checking the 40 on Mets.com but it kept freezing on me.Maybe someone else will have better luck.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2008 Posted November 21, 2008 Can they free up a spot by releasing Billy Wagner?
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2008 Posted November 21, 2008 I don't think they can release him, but they can put him on the 60-day DL, which takes him off as well. I'm actually surprised they haven't done that yet. (Or maybe they can't do that at this point in the off-season yet.)
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted November 21, 2008 Posted November 21, 2008 Can't release an injured player. Guh.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2008 Posted November 21, 2008 There's also no 60-day DL at this time of year -- nowhere to run, nowhere to hide.Besides, it's not like they need to create room here.
