seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 Gotta. Or else why waste the time here?
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 When I got in my car this morning, WFAN was on the radio. (It isn't usually, but I had been listening to the game the night before.) I think the host was the fat bald guy from Loudmouths. (Can't think of his name right now.)The caller said that he's a true fan, and as a true fan he always has to believe that the Mets will find a way to win. I have to assume that he's only been paying attention for two of the last 46 seasons.I think the Mets still have a chance. All they have to do is get hot again; hotter than either the Phillies or the Brewers. But I'm not going to delude myself into thinking they WILL do it. That would be putting "Mets Magic" on the level of "aura and mystique."I HOPE they do it. I'll keep hanging in there for the last 12 games regardless. But no, I don't "have to" believe.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 Are we saying believe they CAN win, or that they WILL win?
soupcan Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 1/2 game out of the division, 1/2 game up in the wild card, 12 games left.No reason not to believe.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 Losing four out of the last five to lower-division teams doesn't fill me with optimism.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 I made such a show of CAHNfidence only a week ago, I guess I gotta stay with that but gotdamn.
Guest metsguyinmichigan Guests Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 Like Tug said.Maybe it's good that this happened now and not, like last year, on the last day. They've had wake-up calls all season, but now it's time to sack up or go home. I say they sack up!
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 Your memory of last year seems a little fuzzy, Michigan.Sure, the last day was awful, but the 16 games preceding that were pretty bad too. They certainly didn't "wait until the last day" to fall apart.Anyway, although there are plenty of similarities to last year, the key difference is that, if the Mets don't make the playoffs in 2008, it will just be a pennant race that they didn't win. It's not a collapse like last year. (Unless, of course, they build up a 6-game lead over the next 6 days, and THEN don't make the playoffs!)
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 I understand what michigan is getting at. Maybe if the '07 Mets had collapsed two weeks earlier, they could have rebounded in time to save the season.I would never label this year as a collapse, it's been a back and forth race all season, but losing the lead with 12 games left might let them exhale a bit. They now know they've lost the lead, and can maybe refocus on getting it back.Brew crew floundering gives me hope. Gun to my head, I say they make the playoffs.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 No, you GOTTA believe. That's why you're a fan. You might not "expect," but you gotta believe they can take it home.
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 GOTTA.C'mon. It's one of the 10 major tenets of faith of being a Mets fan.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 I guess you agree with that caller I heard this morning.I don't feel I "gotta" do anything. I don't do the "faith" thing. I see what I see, and sometimes it leads me to be optimistic, and sometimes it leads me to be pessimistic.I'm very pessimistic about beating out the Phillies. I'm a bit optimistic, as Centerfield is, about making the playoffs, thanks to the Brewers current freefall.
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 I'd rather not be compared to anonymous WFAN callers.I think Seawolf has it on the nose.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 Clearly I'm in the minority here. (Who's the other "don't gotta" voter, I wonder?)I'm one of the few who don't "do faith." (Nor do I do "fear" for that matter. At least not as it relates to the Mets. Or to terrorism.)
Guest Kong76 Guests Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 "Watching the time go and feeling belief growRise above the obstacles"It'd be a shame to close Shea that last Sunday any way but to wish themluck in the playoffs so I gotta believe for eleven more games.
Guest holychicken Guests Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 I gotta believe and that is why I think this all hurts so much.
Guest Kong76 Guests Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 Toned down for those afraid to listen to Ozzy ...
Guest mario25 Guests Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 Gotta believe...this team can do it, they just have to stop thinking
Guest Rockin' Doc Guests Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 I gotta hope, but I don't necessarily believe. I want the Mets to win, I hope they will win, I cheer for them to win, but I don't gotta believe they will win.
