Guest AG/DC Guests Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 ="Nymr83"]double play bails pelfrey outwhy is he on a limit tonight? Not sure. So says Noble.NEW YORK -- The notion of Johan Santana pitching in relief had some appeal. It was a possiblity -- that the Mets' primary starting pitcher would pitch in relief Sunday -- manager Jerry Manuel and new pitching coach Dan Warthen said after Santana had pitched merely five innings in his start against the Giants on Wednesday night. It made sense. Santana hardly had extended himself against the Giants; moreover, Warthen had said he didn't want Mike Pelfrey, the Mets' starter in their final game before the All-Star break, to throw more than 100 pitches on Sunday against the Rockies.Warthen told Santana of the possibility. And Santana embraced it. "See if he wants to be the closer tomorrow," Billy Wagner said on Saturday. "I'll start my break a day early."But by game time Saturday, Warthen had become dissuaded. "Our bullpen is in pretty good shape," he said. "We can back up Pelfrey and let Johan get his rest so he can come back strong."Santana is to start the Mets' game in Cincinnati on Thursday. But the early departure of Pedro Martinez on Saturday -- he pitched four innings -- increased the workload for the bullpen. Carlos Muniz, Aaron Heilman, Scott Schoeneweis and Wagner combined to pitch five innings. And before Saturday, Duaner Sanchez had appeared in three straight games for the second time in eight days.Perhaps there will be need for an extra arm in the 'pen on Sunday night. "I'll do whatever they want," Santana said as he left Shea on Saturday.Chances are, he won't be used. But it hardly would set a precedent if he were. Santana regularly pitched in relief in his first four seasons with the Twins, and former Mets manager Gil Hodges thought nothing of using Tom Seaver and Jerry Koosman in relief in games preceding the All-Star break.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 We haven't seen any Nick Evans power yet - all his ML hits have been to opposite field IIRC - but the minor league stats* and the rep says he has some.Be a nice spot for it.* 39 of his 92 hits this season are for XBs (.250 IsoP)
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 They walk Reyes. Joe said this is a smart move. That means its not.Pitching change.
Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 Nice SF by Evans to pad the lead a bit.
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 I'll take the one run.5-0 us after 4.
Guest AG/DC Guests Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 Got to give some PotG support to Easley for his DP capacities.Howie Rose was there the night of the blackout?
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 Delgado smacks one, his 17th of the year.
Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 ="Zvon"]Nice work as always Zvon.Man the Metsies are firing on all cylinders. Stupid All-Star break.
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 I really like that Kaboom Doc.Thats a saver. You can expect to see it again in some form or another.
Guest AG/DC Guests Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 Quick break for a J.R. Watkins Apothecary Liniment.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 Seems like Easley's been in on at least half the plays in this game - both offensively and defensively. He's either turning two; breaking up two; legging it out so THEY can't turn two and thus being on for Delgado's blast; or just by fielding a ton of grounders.
Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 I will honor the golden arm and bat of Big Pelf himself with my 1000th post.
Guest AG/DC Guests Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 If he was white, he'd be the folk hero of scrappiness.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 Striking out Holliday -- would be so nicePelfrey's dealing folks!
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 This crew only works one game a week, so you'd think they could avoid missing pitches and screwing up, as they just did (showing one thing while telling us it was something else).
Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 Someone should punch Joe Morgan in the neck.
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 ]If he was white, he'd be the folk hero of scrappiness.well, he'd have to be unjustifiably handed an every day job, andalso stop hitting the ball more than 50 feet (see: Eckstein)
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 nice 7 innings from Pelfrey. Normally I'd keep him going, but with the next 3 days off is there anyone in the bullpen who needs some work?
Zach Thornton Syracuse Mets - AAA LHP On Sunday, the southpaw tossed five shutout innings as the bulk pitcher. He gave up 2 hits, walked 2 and had 5 strikeouts. Explore Zach Thornton News >
