The Braves might be shopping Teixiera. Might the Mets be interested? If interested, would they make a deal with the Braves? Would the Braves make a deal with them?

Teixiera turned down an 8 year, $140 million contract with Texas last year. Now, maybe he just really hates the Rangers' organization, but I think it's more likely he would need to be bowled over by an offer to stay off the free agent market. I wouldn't think there'd be many teams willing to give up prospects and pony up a Manny Ramirez style contract to sign him, so there may not be too many competing offers for him (unless a team really only wants to rent him for a few months). Of course, if Atlanta doesn't like any offers, they could always just hang on to him and collect draft picks.

I'd say this development probably has nothing to do with the Mets, but I figured I'd mention it, anyway.

I can't see any situation in which the Mets would have the prospects available to trade for a premiere major league player.

Nor can I see any situation where the Braves would trade a marquee free agent to be to a divisional rival, while playoff spots are still far from assured. It just doesn't ever happen that way.

Free agent elegiblity, salary, and health all factor into these ratings. But if you score all Mets guys from one to ten on both scales, I think Oliver Perez looks pretty vulnerable. I'd score him a 14 or 15.

That said, I don't think he'll go, and they're more likely to trade a minor league semi-prospect for something between Conine and Green.

The Braves are only a game and half behind the Mets, so if they're willing to start selling, we should put some distance between us and them before we even consider buying anybody. (And maybe get over .500 while we're at it.) I also agree with Gwreck that the Mets don't have the prospects to make another big deal, and with Fman that the Braves most likely wouldn't trade with the Mets. I like Teixeira and hope to see a lot of him next year, but he's not going to play any home games at Shea.

Well, it would be a trade for depth's sake. The problem is that such a trade would be the depth we've needed the first half of the season.

Just as a point of information about Teixeira and about how (in some Met circles) he's
a 'must-get' while we can only move on by dealing Beltran away

Here's a breakdown of the 2006-2008 seasons for both Teixeira and Beltran boiled
down to a 500 AB 'standard' season.

Keep in mind also that (while both are good gloves) one is a corner fielder and the other a CFer.

i'm going to say it's less than a dead heat, as Texiera has produced much of that in the dry Texas heat, and doesn't play center.

I think Met fans need to pull up their pants, get some perspective on this guy, and deal with him in November.

They are, but it never hurts to pre-emptively point out that those crazies spend a bit too
much time admiring how green the grass is on the other side.
