Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 194/222/280nearly 100 at-bats.How many more can we afford to give?
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 the correct answer is likely "as few as possible", but with marlon under contract for next year i dont know if the wilpons would be willing to cut him loose and pay him. maybe they could ask him to meet with them in the manager's office, thus prompting him to assault omar minaya.
Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 Ugh. Stupid two year bench contracts.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 IIRC the money wasn't such that they couldn't eat it. Though I will say I was against it when they announced it.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 Marlon Money:2008 = $1.05m2009 = $1.15m
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 That's not much. Can they park him in New Orleans in case they need him? Or does his contract or status forbid that?It might also be possible to trade him to a contender who might want to strengthen their bench and thinks a "change of scenery" might help Marlon. The Mets wouldn't get a lot for him, but shedding the debt and getting a potentially useful minor leaguer wouldn't be the worst thing they could do.

Somehow I doubt that lightning's going to strike twice, but that'd be great.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 Anderson was released by the Dodgers as I recall it
Guest attgig Guests Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 it's time to designate him for assignment. if he clears, and accepts, send him to AAA, if not, unconditional release. He's not worth the 2mil. and if he is, he should work out his problems in AAA, not in ny.
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 Marlon is not as good as he looked for us at the end of last year, but he's also probably not as bad as he looks right now. If you look at his career, he's been streaky at times, but he generally settles around numbers that make him useful for a lefty reserve middle infielder who pinch hits well. The big problem for me is that the Mets see him as a corner outfielder and first baseman, and he's never been a good enough hitter to cut it over the long haul even as a backup at those positions. I think he's more capable of improving his numbers than Nixon or Tatis is, so while he's currently not hitting as well as either he wouldn't be the first guy I'd cut. But the only place I'd consider sticking him in the field is second base, and if he's not needed there, he pinch hits.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 As a player with more than (way more than) 5 ML years under his belt Marlon can (and I'm sure would) refuse any minor league assignment.
Guest metsguyinmichigan Guests Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 Maybe the problem is that he's getting too much playing time, and that he's only good as a pinch-hitter.Not saying that makes him a decent bench player for this particular team, which needs about eight outfielders to deal the injuries.
Guest attgig Guests Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 sure, he may not be as bad as he's been so far this year, but... he's been this bad so far this year, and it's pretty bad. is what he's capable of really worth waiting for?
Guest AG/DC Guests Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 A 2-4 night so far moves him to a community north of Mendoza.
Guest Rockin' Doc Guests Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 Take him out so he can get off the interstate, even if only for one night.
Guest AG/DC Guests Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 Pulls one just short of the fence and his night ends at .202.
