I'm sorry, but he's getting under my skin.

Takes his glove off and places it on the ground and stands on the infield
with hands on hips and then they comment later that he didn't leave the
field quickly and the sunglasses and glove were on the ground again.

If the Mets go as he goes, I don't like where we go sometimes. Grow up.

25 years old. I'd give him 5 years to improve his attitude.

But then again, do the Mets have those 5 years to wait out?

Wright's 25 too, the difference in how they carry themselves is astounding.

Wright, son of a cop, single with no known attachments.

Reyes, do we know much about his upbrining?

The only thing we've known is that he has two children out of wedlock, lives with their mother (has he even tied that knot yet?) and I believe one set of the parents is with them the last time I've seen an indepth profile on Reyes.

Difference is night and day.

I don't want him to become a tightey whitey like Wright, I just think he needs
to knock off some of this stuff.

I don't know, if his teamates don't seem to care it's probably not an issue --
or not as big a one as some might think.

Five years to improve an attitude?

As much is known about Reyes as is known about Wright.

Fair point Edge, guess I'm figuring 30 is an important enough milestone to hit in terms of a person's maturity, or lack thereof.

I'm the son of a cop. My attitude is wanting. And I'm 41.

Me and Lastngs.

This is his 6th season in the major leagues. We don't need to give him another five to mature.

Maturity was due and owing they day he signed his long term contract. I hope he hears it from Jerry again.

Department of Wanting to Have Things Both Ways:

"The team doesn't care. They need to show some passion for the game."

"Reyes gets upset about his error. That's immature."

There's a difference between being upset and smacking your hand against
your glove and hustling off the field and being upset and looking like a baby.

Unmentioned too, was that Delgado really should have caught the throw to
first and by acting that way you're showing up a teammate as well.

I hope Carlos cracked him good in the ass with a wet towel after the game.

Show passion, but only up to a point that suits me....

who cares.... only the media cuz it gives them somehting to write about....

His attitude has the potential to be his undoing and the clubs undoing.
To turn a blind eye to it and dismiss it as passion or some fan not being
suited to it entirely misses the point.

If there wasn't several times this season and last that you didn't think that
he needed a good swift kick in the ass then you're not paying attention to
all the details.

The "give him until he's 30 to act mature" plan is silly, but it is true that some people mature later than others. So there is reason to hope that Reyes will become less petulant over the next few years, but there's also no guarantee that that will happen.

Me, I felt like I got a big dose of maturity when my first child was born. I was 33 at the time. Not that I was a whiny little baby up until that point, but maturity took a big leap forward at that key milestone. Jose, of course, is already a dad, but perhaps parenthood came when he was too young or self-centered for it to have an impact. Or maybe he needs something else to grow him up. Or maybe he never will.

I like his skills. I like watching him hit triples and make great defensive plays. I understand that players slump, but his slumps seem, at least, more like funks from my limited perspective. I do wish he was more likable. It's got to be hard to "grow up" in such a high-profile public role, but he's not doing a particularly good job of it.

Only in the mind of the beholder.

Do you want passion or not? Or only approved passion? Approved by you, of course.

Seems to me, you can't complain that the players don't care and then criticize them for being immature when they do show they care. Which do you want? Pick one or the other. Because you can't have it both ways. If players are passionate, you're going to see displays of passion that you don't quite like.

BTW, Reyes made it clear he was mad at himself, not Delgado. And if you have to constantly worry about showing people up, then there's no point in showing any passion for the game.

I think you can. They clearly were looking for passion of a certain type in a certain context.

RC: Do you want passion or not?<<<

Yes.

RC: Or only approved passion? Approved by you, of course<<<

Of course nothing, I don't see why you're making it about me. Maybe you guys
don't see the games ... it comes up all the time about him and it's been posted
about here and there many times too. It's an issue like it or not and this is the
thread where it will be discussed until someone starts another or he improves.

I'm a boil on the Mets' fan base ass, so go of course yourself, with this ap-
proval nonsense.

Of course you can.

How about when Clemens shows his passion by throwing bats at people? Or when Jason Giambi berates a teammate in the middle of the field in a playoff game (the game I'm referring to is the one where a grossly out-of-position Jeter threw out Jeremy Giambi at home). Or how about the minor league batter that threw a bat at an umpire (and actually hit the guy, unlike Clemens)?

I can approve of passion without approving of these. There's a difference between acting with passion and acting like an asshole. Or, in Reyes' case, acting like a baby with his head up his ass. To suggest otherwise is stupid.

5yrs?!
lol.
No, he's 25 and he is the person he is.
He can make the change in attitude and maturity, if he realizes that it is a bad attitude, immature, and wants to change.
You can change yourself at any age, for better or worse.

The throwing the glove down, the slow walk off the field....its bush.
Its little league bullshit that I wouldn't even want to see on a little league field.
Thats child like sulking.
I don't care if he's pissed at himself, his first baseman, or the entire world.
Save it for the tunnel behind the dugout.

There's positive passion and there's misplaced passion.
I can't simply define it in terms of baseball but I know each when I see it.
Sulking, moping, tantrums, etc. do not equate to passion in my book.

I'm one of the biggest fans Reyes could have, and I'm thrilled that he's a Met and I have this guy on my team to watch and appreciate. I'd like it to be so for years to come.
But if he ends up being the type of player who a manager can't speak his mind to, or handle, because he might go into sulkingbroody mode that is reflected in his play,..
and he seems to be evolving into that type,..then I don't want him on my team.
Get rid of him.

He is a player on a team. A cog in a wheel.
An important cog? Most certainly.
This team might revolve around Reyes but this world doesn't.
Grow up.
Play the game with the respect it deserves.
Realize that the way you carry yourself on the field directly attributes to the way you are percieved.

What we said to Little Leaguers was "Now apologize to Mr. Glove."

That afternoon early in 2002 when Rey Ordoez played inexplicably awful defense and threw his glove into the stands was, in retrospect, when Rey-Rey jumped the shark altogether. I got an eerie flashback to that when I saw what Rey-Reyes did Sunday.

Maybe Rey did that to get rid of the glove.

I'm pretty sure Turk Wendell's shark-jumping coincided with a glove-tossing incident as well.

Do you think Turk Wendell has ever physically jumped a shark? Motorcycle-assisted or otherwise, I mean. He seems like the kind of guy who might have.

It was once said, when Mickey Mouse watches were popular, that Mickey Mouse wore a Spiro Agnew watch. Then a smart entrepreneur went out and made Spiro Agnew watches.
