This is David's third win this season and fifth overall. He is the first Met to be named Player of the Month five times. Wright led the Mets in August with 28 runs, 39 hits, 26 walks, a .394 batting average and and on base percentage of .516. Wright's 6 home runs were second to Moises Alou's 7. He also had 21 runs batted in, trailing only Carlos Beltran, who had 23. The Schaefer Mets Pitcher of the Month for August 2007 is ORLANDO HERNANDEZ.Hernandez edged Tom Glavine for the honor, beating him by a mere 0.13 points. This is Hernandez's second win. (He previously won this honor in September 2006.) In six starts in August, Hernandez was 2-0 with an ERA of 4.17. He led the Mets in innings pitched with 36.2 and finished second to Oliver Perez (39) in strikeouts, with 37.Month-to-date totals for August 2007Through game of August 31, 2007RankNamePoints1David Wright28.342Carlos Beltran22.453Jos Reyes18.264Moises Alou16.925Carlos Delgado15.456Orlando Hernandez14.477Tom Glavine14.348Luis Castillo12.749Marlon Anderson12.1510Oliver Perez9.2711Jorge Sosa8.5712Lastings Milledge8.5613Shawn Green7.0214John Maine5.8715Aaron Heilman5.2816Pedro Feliciano5.1317Damion Easley4.8818Mike DiFelice4.3819Guillermo Mota4.2820Brian Lawrence4.1821Billy Wagner3.7822Ramon Castro3.6923Scott Schoeneweis2.7824Aaron Sele2.6125Paul Lo Duca2.4026Endy Chavez2.0227Ruben Gotay1.9028David Newhan1.8729Jeff Conine1.7230Sandy Alomar0.45Previous WinnersYearAprilMayJuneJulyAugustSeptember2005Cliff FloydPlayer of the MonthPedro MartinezPitcher of the MonthMike CameronPlayer of the MonthPedro MartinezPitcher of the MonthCliff FloydPlayer of the MonthPedro MartinezPitcher of the MonthJos ReyesPlayer of the MonthPedro MartinezPitcher of the MonthDavid WrightPlayer of the MonthTom GlavinePitcher of the MonthTom GlavinePlayer of the Month,Pitcher of the Month2006Tom GlavinePlayer of the Month,Pitcher of the MonthCarlos BeltranPlayer of the MonthPedro MartinezPitcher of the MonthDavid WrightPlayer of the MonthAlay SolerPitcher of the MonthCarlos BeltranPlayer of the MonthJohn MainePitcher of the MonthJos ReyesPlayer of the MonthSteve TrachselPitcher of the MonthCarlos DelgadoPlayer of the MonthOrlando HernandezPitcher of the Month2007Jos ReyesPlayer of the MonthJohn MainePitcher of the MonthDavid WrightPlayer of the MonthOliver PerezPitcher of the MonthJohn MainePlayer of the Month,Pitcher of the MonthDavid WrightPlayer of the MonthJohn MainePitcher of the MonthDavid WrightPlayer of the MonthOrlando HernandezPitcher of the Month Edited September 6, 2007 by Guest
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 ]This is Maine's second win. (He previously won this honor inTypo there Yancy.....congrats to both David and El Duque, was that the tightest race ever for first place?
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2007 Author Posted September 6, 2007 Thanks. Typo was fixed. You mean first place among the pitchers, I assume. The answer is: I don't know. If you're curious, go to http://potg.ultimatemets.com and you can see for yourself.
Guest Johnny Dickshot Guests Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 Fantastic. Can we do an all-time monthly point-total list? I'd like to know whose had the Schaferiest months ever.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2007 Author Posted September 6, 2007 You can find that out by poking around at http://potg.ultimatemets.com.Keep in mind that Schaefer totals were higher in 2005 when we had the "must vote 10 points" rule in effect.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 We have a dogfight brewing for Pitcher of the Year. Tom Glavine could win it while never winning any particularly month.Meanwhile, Billy Wagner sits behind Damion Easley. DAMION EASLEY!

Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 DiFelice's target should be David Newhan for the coveted 30th slot.In our rankings (not that this isn't a different beast), only the first 30 guys get paid.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2007 Author Posted September 6, 2007 Well, that's just for August, irish. In the season voting, Wagner (14th place) is well ahead of DiFelice (34th), Lawrence (35th) and Mota (23rd). But he is behind Easley (13th).Wagner's 14th makes sense to me. (I don't really think the role of a closer is as important as others do.) Easley's 13th is more surprising.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 Not much surprise there in either category. I think the forum got it right.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 I think PotG has been under-rewarding Wagner. Not in August, just in general. I've seen an awful lot of small or even non-existant scores even on days when he's put up a perfect inning while protecting a 1-run lead.Even last season - when he wasn't as good as this year and was, at least theoretically, going up against a tougher crew - he still managed to finish 12th. On the other hand, our year-end rankings project partially made up for it - there he finished 7th overall last season and none of the participants kept him out of their personal top 10.Maybe this means that closers tend to be appreciated on the whole, just not on a day-to-day basis.

I felt that way last year too.Generally speaking, I try to vote one point per scoreless inning in a save situation for all relievers (reduced proportionally in exceptional circumstances). I get the impression that such a vote is on the high end for relievers.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2007 Author Posted September 6, 2007 How Billy Wagner has earned his Schaefer points(Sorted in order of points awarded)He seems to do better, on the whole, when he saves a one-run game with a scoreless inning. (In those cases, I always give him at least 1 point.)When he gives up runs, or is protecting a larger lead, he gets fewer points.If he were to come in with a three-run lead, and give up two and get the save, I wouldn't give him any points for that. It doesn't look like that's happened this year. I can see a few games where he seems to have been cheated. The 0.72 points on August 8, for example.DateOpponentResultPointsiphrersobbdecision06/25/2007CardinalsW, 2-11.6820003005/11/2007BrewersW, 5-41.09100000Sv07/14/2007RedsW, 2-11.09100010Sv05/18/2007YankeesW, 3-21.08110020Sv06/29/2007PhilliesW, 6-51.08100030Sv07/28/2007NationalsW, 3-11.06100000Sv04/13/2007NationalsW, 3-21.04100000Sv06/23/2007AthleticsW, 1-00.95110010W05/23/2007BravesW, 3-00.9110020Sv06/26/2007CardinalsL, 3-50.8810001004/29/2007NationalsW, 1-00.87110010Sv05/09/2007GiantsW, 5-30.87100020Sv07/22/2007DodgersW, 5-40.87100032Sv05/31/2007GiantsW, 4-20.86100020Sv08/14/2007PiratesW, 5-40.85100010Sv06/05/2007PhilliesL, 2-40.811001007/20/2007DodgersW, 4-10.76100010Sv05/04/2007DiamondbacksW, 5-30.75100011Sv07/12/2007RedsW, 3-20.75110000Sv06/15/2007YankeesW, 2-00.74100020Sv08/01/2007BrewersW, 8-50.73120010Sv08/08/2007BravesW, 4-30.72120001Sv08/18/2007NationalsW, 7-40.7100011Sv04/12/2007PhilliesW, 5-30.68110000Sv06/08/2007TigersW, 3-00.68100020Sv07/15/2007RedsW, 5-20.67100000Sv07/25/2007PiratesW, 6-30.65100000Sv05/08/2007GiantsW, 4-10.63100020Sv04/03/2007CardinalsW, 4-10.6100000Sv05/29/2007GiantsW, 5-40.5810002105/02/2007MarlinsW, 6-30.55110000Sv09/02/2007BravesW, 3-20.45121100Sv08/15/2007PiratesW, 10-80.370.210010Sv06/20/2007TwinsL, 2-60.3310001007/07/2007AstrosW, 5-30.27110000Sv07/05/2007AstrosW, 6-20.2210002105/25/2007MarlinsW, 6-20.1812112104/28/2007NationalsW, 6-20.1612002008/03/2007CubsW, 6-20.1112000008/05/2007CubsW, 8-30.1111001008/12/2007MarlinsW, 10-40.110001005/19/2007YankeesW, 10-70.0912112005/27/2007MarlinsW, 6-40.08111120Sv08/21/2007PadresW, 7-60.07111121W04/09/2007PhilliesW, 11-50.0610002006/29/2007PhilliesW, 5-20.0611002104/01/2007CardinalsW, 6-10.0412000005/16/2007CubsW, 8-10.0410000004/21/2007BravesW, 7-20.0310000108/24/2007DodgersW, 5-20.02131110
Guest sharpie Guests Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 Willie Collazo in yesterday's crappy game probably entered the list way above the bottom few.
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 Other strange ones:The 1-0 victories on 4/29/07 (at WAS) and 6/23/07 (vs. OAK). Most puzzling perhaps because one would think thata. Not a whole lot of points earned by the offense; andb. Even if the starting pitcher got 6, there wasn't a whole point available for pitching a scoreless inning to end the game?
metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 i've actually gone in and reevaluated how i award schaeffer points, particularly to relievers. i've significantly upped the proprietary marathon points for saves, and given a little nudge to inherited runners stranded, among other more subtle differences... as i looked at my voting for the year i began to realize that marathon points in a save get suppressed by the higher total points seen in a win. more positive contributors mean each individual contribution is lessened when the whole is normalized to a maximum of 10 points. so a contribution such as a save should be inflated, almost artificially, to correct for this. using my old system, billy was the 12th best met, just ahead of moises alou. using my new system, he's up to 9th best, just ahead of shawn green. see: Player old rank new rank difference old points new points difference Wright 1 1 - 123.1 124.7 1.6 Reyes 2 2 - 96.3 90.7 (5.6) Beltran 3 3 - 93.0 89.9 (3.1) Glavine 4 4 - 83.6 83.9 0.3 Delgado 5 6 (1) 80.0 74.9 (5.1) OHernandez 6 5 1 76.4 76 (0.4) Maine 7 7 - 67.7 71.8 4.1 Perez 8 8 - 60.4 62.2 1.8 LoDuca 9 11 (2) 48 47.7 (0.3) Green 10 10 - 46.7 49.6 2.9 Sosa 11 13 (2) 46 43.8 (2.2) Wagner 12 9 3 43.1 57.5 14.4 Alou 13 15 (2) 40.7 37.7 (3.0) Heilman 14 14 - 37.3 38.3 1.0 Feliciano 15 12 3 36.7 46.8 10.1 Schoeneweis 16 16 - 34.3 37 2.7 Easley 17 19 (2) 29.2 26.5 (2.7) Mota 18 18 - 27.5 27.2 (0.3) Smith 19 17 2 27.1 28.1 1.0 Sele 20 21 (1) 23.5 24.5 1.0 Gotay 21 20 1 23.5 25.4 1.9 Castro 22 22 (1) 22.8 21.7 (1.1) Milledge 23 23 - 20.6 18.9 (1.7) Chavez 24 25 (1) 20.4 18.2 (2.2) Valentin 25 24 1 19.4 18.4 (1.0) Castillo 26 27 (1) 16.5 14.6 (1.9) Anderson 27 28 (1) 13.5 12.4 (1.1) Gomez 28 29 (1) 13.4 12.4 (1.0) Burgos 29 26 3 12.6 14.8 2.2 Newhan 30 30 - 9.8 10.4 0.6 Pelfrey 31 31 - 8.8 10.3 1.5 Ledee 32 32 - 5.8 5.9 0.1 Lawrence 33 33 - 5.6 5.9 0.3 Franco 34 34 - 5.2 5.7 0.5 Conine 35 35 - 2.1 2.2 0.1 Ambres 36 37 (1) 1.6 1.7 0.1 DiFelice 36 36 - 1.6 2 0.4 Martinez 38 38 - 1.4 1.2 (0.2) Vargas 38 40 (2) 1.4 0.8 (0.6) Adkins 40 39 1 1 1 - Alomar 41 41 - 0.8 0.7 (0.1) Johnson 42 42 - 0.3 0 (0.3) Ahernandez 43 42 1 0 0 - Padilla 43 42 1 0 0 - Park 43 42 1 0 0 - Sanchez 43 42 1 0 0 - Urdaneta 43 42 1 0 0 - Williams 43 42 1 0 0 - (thru 4 sept 07)
Guest Johnny Dickshot Guests Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 ]...points in a save get suppressed by the higher total points seen in a win...I think that's the whole thing. And because Wagner's most often showing up in close, winning games, I would guess he's also "punished" by heavy rewards to the offensive player who makes the difference. Lower than Easley seems low, but I don't think a different closer does much better or much worse. Maybe 12 is where he belongs.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 Lower than Easley seems butt low. He's a legitimate All-Star!
metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 win shares has him tied for 8th place with perez & green at 9 win shares apeice. damian easley sits right behind the trio with 8 win shares.he's the 5th best met pitcher and 9th overall met with a VORP of 20, and his WARP3 is the 6th best overall.somewhere between 8th & 10th best met sounds the most appropriate to me for billy. i mean, are loduca, green, sosa, alou really better than him this year? i'm not so sure...sounds like a fun discussion for the end of the year!
