2007 Met Game Scores

i was thinking about Game Scores today, as I noticed one in a box score I read. And I wondered which Met starters have had the best and worst starts, as measured by this stat.

For the unitiiated, Game Scores were inventd by Bill James to measure the most dominant starts by pitchers. This definition is stolen from another site.

Start with 50 points. Add 1 point for each out recorded, (3 points per inning). Add 2 points for each inning completed after the 4th. Add 1 point for each strikeout. Subtract 2 points for each hit allowed. Subtract 4 points for each earned run allowed. Subtract 2 points for each unearned run allowed. Subtract 1 point for each walk.

An advanced pitching statistic developed by Bill James used to measure how dominant a pitcher performed in each game he pitched. Often referred to as "Ryanicity" since Nolan Ryan and his multiple no-hitters were amongst the best Game Scores ever recorded until Kerry Wood threw his twenty strikeout game in 1998. The strikeouts in that game combined with the lack of hits (1) made it better than a perfect game as the statistics rewards dominance (strikes) and lack of hits while penalizing for walks.

Try and get me the pitcher, the opponent, and the approximate time of year, and we'll figure it out together.

Lawrence's start had a game score of 42. Vargas' first, on May 17, did indeed top that, with a 47.

Two guys got called up and did better.

I'm going to guess that Sosa's game against the Tigers was perhaps our best start of the year. Wasn't that a complete game shutout? Or did he go eight and let Wags close the door?

Sosa threw eight shutout. walked two, whiffed five, good four the fourth best game score of the year.

Ah! El Duque vs the A's in June 1-0. I know he didn't complete the game, but I think he struck out a bunch of people.

A very good start --- seven innings, six hits, one walk, seven strikeouts --- but not quite one of the top ten. Game score was 71.

Unfortuantely for that bold performance, the formula doesn't consider hos slim the margin you're working with is.

Hernandez vs. the A's was tied for 10th best Schaefer score this year. (4.71 points.)

Sosa vs. Detroit was third with 5.23 points.

I can post the Schaefer Top Ten, but I don't want to spoil the quiz here.

I'll just go this far: I'll throw the highest Schaefer score into the ring and see where it lands: Orlando Hernandez, April 3 vs. St. Louis, 1 ER in 7 innings. 5 hits, 2 walks, no strikeouts. 5.56 Schaefer points.

That was May 13. Tied for 10th in Schaefer points at 4.71.

April 29. Tied for second best Schaefer score with Sosa/Tigers at 5.23. (I hadn't noticed the tie earlier when I said that Sosa's game was third best.)

When we say lowest scores, does that mean the WORST games? I have to guess Glavine getting rocked in Detroit (with me in the upper deck) had to be one. Hack, the Maine game I witnessed in Chicago last weekend couldn't be much better -- 6 ER in three innings.

Jeez, you were there for Detroit Rock City. I'm so sorry. That was the second lowest game score of the season --- a hard-to-conceive 5.
