Smith Down, Adkins Up

Bullpen maneuverings have Bazooka Joe blowing bubbles in New Orleans. Jon Adkins reportedly arriving, though with Pelfrey due for one of the D/N doubleheader games (presumably the loss), don't know if he'll see action.

I can't imagine they'll go into a doubleheader with one fewer pitcher in the 'pen. Can they pitch Pelfrey in game 1, then send him down and have Adkins available for game 2?

That's a bad guess.

they can make roster moves between the 2 games, but if Adkins is sent down to call Pelfrey up for game 1 he can't be called back up that quickly.
What they could do is send down a hitter before game 1 to get Pelfrey on the roster and then send Pelfrey down after game 1 to activate Alou, but i don't know Alou's timetable.

Smith has been awful since that 5-run inning in Detroit. I know he's had some scattered successful outings but overall -- yuck. A few weeks in AAA might be good for him.

I was just about to note the fall that Smith has taken recently - and that it had gone pretty
much under the radar - when the news came that he was dropped down.
So here it is anyway since it illustrates things very well.

Wait a sec... if I'm doing my math right, since that night in Detroit, Smith has pitched 12.1 innings giving up 5 runs for an ERA around 3.66. This is nowhere near what he was doing in April, but I don't think anyone expected him not to give up any earned runs for the whole season... and it's still a hell of a lot better than our very own admitted steroid user, who, I would guess, is going to get even more work in the time Smith spends languishing in AAA. And Smith's aren't exactly horrible.

Can someone explain this move to me too?

In a word?

Options.

The plan is to use Joe less in NO so he can get strong again, the Mets/Omar feel that Smith ran out of gas, this being his first year and all.

Options is part of it. Not everyone else can be sent down.

But they're also reportedly concerned that is velocity is trending down as his IPs are headed up
toward a level he's never been at before.
Remember that he was just drafted last June so he's coming off a year that consists of a much
shorter college season plus a partial year of minor league ball.
In the minors they can use him a little more judiciously and then bring him back if he
straightens himself out.
