Mets Magic HR Apple

Sometime, last year I think, the conversation about the Home Run Apple that currently just says HOME RUN on it and how when it first came into being it was part of the IIRC 1981 "The Magic Is Back" marketing campaign and originally had "Mets Magic" on it for about a year and HOME RUN replaced it.

Well I came across a shot that has the Mets Magic sign on it, you can just make out "Mets" but it is a nice shot of the Apple in its early form

Unfortunately there exists a version of the apple in centerfield on the Citifield renderings.

This leads me to believe that that two-bit, minor-league carnival attraction will be there.

I was going to suggest a poll (which I think will show that this forum votes
anywhere from indifference to make it go away) but I wanted to poke Mr.
Rogers in the ribs first.

I like the apple at Shea, but i think of it as part of the ballpark not the team, it should be left out of citi field, let the place develop its own character.

remember when Daryl Strawberry homered as a Yankee (was it against the Mets or was it when the roof fell down at their place?) and the apple went halfway up then down?

the opportunity to make fun of their broken-down dump (which, by the way, is not really the same stadium where all the yankee greats played) was well worth having them here for a week.

I'm pretty sure the wink and "you sound like a Yanqui fan" was my SC notation as that actually is something a real Yankee fan would throw at Met fans in trying to claim that they do things differently and with more "class" than the Mets do at Shea.

Personally, I can go either way.

Keep it as a tacky reminder that no, we aren't the Yankees and we don't plan to be the same IBM corporate image that the Yankees since the late 90's have tried to be. Which is a far cry from The Bronx Is Burning Era BTW, not to mention the same Yankee fans crying foul when Stump Merrill demanded Donnie Baseball to get his hair cut are telling guys like Johnny Damon, Randy Johnson and Jason Giambi should "conform" to the way the Yankees are and laughing at the Red Sox's idiot looks.

Or not, like the panels that used to decorate Shea and in recent years the neon players, or the old DiamondVision, let it be a relic of team and Shea Stadium history. Let the new place have its own quirks and attractions.

Interesting observation, even this website:
http://savetheapple.com/ has fallen into apathy, either that or there are more interesting causes out there in terms of preservation due to the coming of Citi Field, i.e. The Iron Triangle/Willets Point

Anyway my post was more about Soupcan's almost Yanqui like observation rather than The Apple's continued existence.
