Guest sharpie Guests Posted May 1, 2007 Posted May 1, 2007 A Yankee fan from Queens --- the worst kind.http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/europe/04/30/bomb.plot.ap/index.html
Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted May 1, 2007 Posted May 1, 2007 ]The slightly built Yankees fan from Queens described how he mingled with radicals from the fall of 2001, when he quit a job as a computer programmer and left New York for Lahore -- saying he was radicalized by the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan. It's funny that they mention that he's a Yankee fan. Was he wearing a Derek Jeter jersey and a pinstriped turban when he was busted?
soupcan Old-Timey Member Posted May 1, 2007 Posted May 1, 2007 ]Babar pleaded guilty in the United States in 2004 to smuggling money and military supplies to a senior al Qaeda figure and awaits sentencing.Who'd a thunk it?
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted May 1, 2007 Posted May 1, 2007 The crown is a dead give-away. They originally picked him up when they caught him smuggling ivory onto a flight.

metirish Old-Timey Member Posted May 1, 2007 Posted May 1, 2007 It really is kinda weird to read that he's a MFY fan,not surprising to me that he's a fan of the evil empire, all the guys from Pakistan and India I have worked with over the years are.
stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted May 1, 2007 Posted May 1, 2007 Of course, while I've seen data somewhere that said Yankee fans are more affluent (probably based on everything North (Westchester/Rockland County, South (New Jersey) and East (CT) of the City being considered Yankee country) than Met fans (despite Long Island being a major hub for Met fans) the fact that the Yankees (along with the Dodgers, Lakers, Bulls, Cowboys, Raiders, ect) are considered one of the most universally known American sport franchises they'll attract the causal immigrant (I'm not suggesting that all immigrants are poor, or anything, but I'm basing it on immigrants who come looking for a better life and starting from pretty much scratch) based on a quick decision based on who they know rather than actually thinking about who they should root for. It makes sense, no matter how hard the Mets have seemed to try over the years (it's sad that a lot of people only think the Mets targeted the Latino audience once Omar became the GM), but that population generally gravitiates towards the Yankees because they've heard the Yankee name in their country.

stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted May 1, 2007 Posted May 1, 2007 What? Rendered speechless? No snarky remark about my generalzations on a certain segment of society being no better than what your average dumb, uninformed WABC caller would say?
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted May 1, 2007 Posted May 1, 2007 Steve, it doesn't take snarkiness to note that you build assumption upon assumption to make an argument.
stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted May 1, 2007 Posted May 1, 2007 I was just responding to KC's lack of response. I still think my argument makes sense, I mean the Yankee logo itself is the among the most reconigzed sports logo in the world, so you come to this area of the country knowing hardly anything about baseball, are you going to root for some team that you may have heard vauge references to, or are you going to root for a team you have heard about?
Guest Kid Carsey Guests Posted May 1, 2007 Posted May 1, 2007 SJR: >>>What? Rendered speechless? No snarky remark about my generalzations ...<<<Lol, I don't know what happened. I guess it was snarky, something to theeffect of that you keep topping yourself, I must have cut and pasted wrong.I don't mean to be mean, and I cop to being overly sarcastic more often than not.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted May 1, 2007 Posted May 1, 2007 That's fine Steve, but you cite ambiguous "data," then switch to the passive voice when you don't want to be held to a statement. I know both are cardinal sins of the profession you're in training for.
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted May 1, 2007 Posted May 1, 2007 nah, in sports writing you can do whatever you want, just don't try to take that crap to other subjects.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted May 1, 2007 Posted May 1, 2007 Glad to say Steve I was not one of those poor immigrants that became a yankee fan because I knew what their shitty cap looked like.
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted May 1, 2007 Posted May 1, 2007 now that the link between the Yankees and Al-Qaeda has been proven action MUST be taken to monitor the entire organization and its Al-Qaeda sympathizing fans. I propose the forfeiting of the rest of the season, wiretapping of all Yankee-owned phonelines, and closing down of any establishment that displays the Yankee logo more prominently than it does that of other NY sports teams. Furthermore, anyone shouting "we love derek jeter" shall be detained for questioning on suspicion that "jeter" is in fact al-qaeda code for "osama."
