nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted April 29, 2007 Posted April 29, 2007 Julio Franco in the post game interview just used one of my least favorite cliches "they've got a pretty good ballclub." If The Nationals are "pretty good" then I'd like to ask him who is bad, or even who is average.
Guest OlerudOwned Guests Posted April 29, 2007 Posted April 29, 2007 Glad to see the Mets won, too. It's been a good day.

It's a great day for baseball.""Thank you, Julio. How about another?"'Ummm--put your pants on one leg at a time? How's that?""Excellent. How'd you feel making a tough defensive play when you hardly ever play defense anymore and are the age of Oxygen?""You always want to give it your best effort. I'm just happy to be here.""Wow. Two for one!" I hate interviews with athletes, did I ever mention that?

Guest Iubitul Guests Posted April 29, 2007 Posted April 29, 2007 hmmmmmmm - I wasn't clear. I wasn't trying to say that our bullpen is bad - I was making more of a comment about how I live and die with each game...
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted April 29, 2007 Posted April 29, 2007 Yeah, but, I'm sure Pittsburgh and Philadelphia fans do also. And they're dying more oft.
Guest Iubitul Guests Posted April 29, 2007 Posted April 29, 2007 Nah - us Mets fans are more passionate than any other ;-)
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted April 29, 2007 Posted April 29, 2007 Spotaneous decision to drive down to DC for the game today. Nice weather. Maybe 20% Mets fans (announced attendance 27,000+) but they were all pretty quiet. Not mentioned in this IGT: First inning -- Reyes singles, Wright walks. What does Carlos Beltran, he of the among-the-lead-leaders-in-RBI do? He bunts. Of course, we fail to get a runner home from third with less than 2 out (again). Lucky for Carlos that he hit that homer, otherwise I'd be much more upset with him than I already was.Maine looked good to great (granted, it was not an offensive juggernaut he was facing) but was definetly ready to come out after the 7th inning (105 pitches and some trouble in the 7th) and he was due to lead off in the top of the 8th.RFK sucks generally but wasn't quite as bad as I expected. They also play Sweet Caroline (barf) in the 8th inning. Ticket prices were a bit high, IMO, for a last place team. Overall had a blast though. Looking forward to (repeat?) trips to see the new park next year.

Tough to believe, I know (sc is pretty fucking high here). It's rare that a player is going to call another team a bad team. This is not new and is not going to change any time soon. Complaining about it is old.
Guest iramets Guests Posted April 29, 2007 Posted April 29, 2007 He wasn't asked "Tell me, Julio, honesty, what do you think of the Washington ballclub." If he's going to volunteer this information by itself, he should take some crap for it.If you think about it, it's pretty patronizing to say what he said. If I were a Nat, and smart and sensitive, I'd think "Hey, he isn;t saying that shit about the Cardinals, is he? That's code for "The Nats suck.'"Fortunately I'm not a Nat and not very smart and sensitive as a goddamned toilet seat cover, so Julio's safe from my wrath.
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted April 29, 2007 Posted April 29, 2007 what are they going to do? hit him with a pitch when he's pinch-hitting later in the season? i'll take the free baserunner.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 From the Times.....]According to Stats LLC, only three Mets have entered May unbeaten with four or more victories and a lower E.R.A. than Maine: Frank Viola (1.32) in 1990, Jerry Koosman in 1968 (1.04) and 1973 (1.06) and Dwight Gooden (1.26) in the World Series championship season of 1986. That’s it. No Tom Terrific or David Cone, no Tom Glavine or Al Leiter on that list.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 Interesting in that just a week ago we were comparing 1990 Viola with 1968 Koosman.I would have thought 1985 Gooden would have been a stronger candidate for that list than 1986 Gooden.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 As good as Gooden was in 1985, he got hit pretty hard on opening day, and Gorman won in relief.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 In fact, I'd imagine his opening day ERA is pretty high, with a noticeable Tuffy Rhodes factor.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 The highlight shows only showed me Julio's great play in the seventh. Tell me about his second play.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 He made a pretty slick snag in the eighth to end the inning with the bases loaded.
