Players not tendered contracts by tonight's deadline:

Victor Zambrano - Mets
"The Mets planned to continue negotiations with Zambrano" (espn.com)
IOW, we might want you ... but not at $2.4mil

Alexis Gomez - Tigers

Joel Piniero - Mariners

Aaron Guiel - Yanquis

Marcus Giles - Braves

Jason Bulger (RHP) - Angels

More to come I'm sure.

It's sad seeing Rick Ankiel listed. He's now struggling to make it as an outfielder after losing all control as a pitcher. A person's psyche can be a very mysterious and fragile thing sometimes.

theres alot of interesting names there, i'd want to talk to the agents for Duckworth, Piniero, Williams, Sosa, Werth, Giles, and Tsao. With the exception of Giles i don't think we'd offer any of them an immediate job (Sosa would make the team in the pen i suppose and Werth would probably displace someone as the 5th outfielder) but all would be well worth stashing away as projects at AAA.

Well, an injury cost Ankiel all of 2006. He slugged 21 homers in only 85 games between two levels in 1985.

I've no doubt he could have made it as an outfielder had he started earlier. He'll probably eventually get some big-league opportunity, but it may be too late to stick anywhere.

i like Piniero and Giles, for immediate help, and Werth and Claussen for AAA depth, because of their still unrealized upside.
