This image illustrates both Appier's absurdly awkward pitching motion and the general disheveling of his face. He was never particularly graceful or fluid; just a maximum-effort guy. It was always a death struggle with him out there.

http://www.twinscards.com/images/products/941__large.jpgApparently, there was a rule that all Twins hat to wear their hats high, in order to imidate the opponent by adding two inches to everybody's height.

It strikes me that the sun no longer shines on Twins in their home whites, and it hasn't for a generation. And that's sad. It hits me now so hard that I think I have to take some personal time and go home.

Note how the red dot puntuating the card is like a reflection of the beanie dot in the hat.

Not too many Mets can claim a statue honoring them. Granted at a ballpark twice removed from the place the action of the statue is supposed to have taken place in!

Tucker Ashford's lone entry in Met Yearbookdom.

What makes it interesting is that it is the Revised Edition of the 1983 book, and he and Mark Bradley replace the full page that the departed Neil Allen occupied in the First Edition of the book.

Even as back as 71 the Mets had some steady defensive INF units! Bob Aspromonte here joins 69ners Harrelson and Boswell.

Interestingly enough, Aspromonte was on the 1956 Brooklyn Dodgers, and was the last former Brooklyn Dodger to be playing in MLB

This is interesting because it shows that Pedro was once a stringy pitcher far from the huskier dude that he later became.

Benny Ayala, Thread Killer.

The most interesting thing here is that Benny is shown sans his trademark moustache. That, and the fact that he only played in one game (3 AB) for the Cardinals, but yet this photo is available on eBay. And his autograph looks nothing like any of his other autographs on eBay.

I defy anyone to find an interesting Manny Aybar photo so we can move on to the Bs.

seawolf, that's the fucking spirit.

Also interesting in that you capture him in a Cards uniform during the regrettable movement to displace road grays with road light blues.

Got your back, Jack.

Other Ayala sigs:

I'm not saying that one above is a forgery, but I don't know if it fits. Maybe with the index card one.

God, I love that 1983 Topps set.

Actually, the more I look at that photo, the more I think it's not even Benny Ayala. Hmmm.

edit: Maybe it is. Baseball Almanac lists him as #15.

Backman time:

http://www.getalifealready.com/cpf/avatars/Backman2.jpgThis may be frequently seen around dthese parts once a poster hits his 6100th post, but this is some of Zvon's best work. It's not just the awesome hirsuteness of Wally, but the gauzy lighting, the nebulous border, the rugged dimple and tan, and the square formatting. This avatar has everything in common with a seventies folk rock album cover.

Why, if you zoom in on that logo in the corner, it may say something about the Mets winning a championship, but it may just as well say:

Gordon Lightfoot: Barefoot Girl or
Cat Stevens: Ballad of the Fisher Cat, or
The Very Best of John Ford Colby.

Mike Bacsik...

Not sure what company, maybe Topps, and I really don't have time to start digging for it, but there is a 2003 card of Bacsik pitching in a 1986 throwback jersey.

Seawolf (or anyone with that particular card), do you have that image more readily available than I do? (thanks in advance)

http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/9827/hough/Hough_Bacsik.jpgThis is probably an innocent exchange between a pitcher and the coach who has just pulled him. In fact, I'm uncertain if Charlie Hough is saying goodybe or hello to Mike Bacsik here, but Bacsik sure seems to be saying, listen, old man, I don't like you and my dad didn't like you, now givie me back the ball before I rip your nuts off.

Carlos Baerga.

I prefer this picture of Mike Bacsik, who was nice enough to pose for a photo with MK -

OK guys - let's make cooby happy. Find a great photo of Carlos Baerga!

This (probably) isn't from cooby's house, but it could be -

I also found this very tiny image of Baerga on a Kellogg's Frosted Flakes box -

Next up - Kevin Baez.

Hmmm....I have a little Jacobs Field on my Carlos Baerga Indians shrine. My little Shea Stadium is with the Carlos Baerga Mets shrine.

"How many roads must a man walk down..."
Oh sorry wrong Baez...though many Met fans must have thought Joan would have made a better hitter! Traded for David Segui, but joins the ranks of the "Career Mets"

It might be just the lighting, but it does appear Bailor is trying unsucessfully to fit in with his scruffy haired early 80's INF mates like Backman and Hernandez. Well it looks like a start anyway!

OH, you mean the 1976 Met Billy Baldwin...

Now THAT is a pretty good Fro. Not on the Oscar Gamble level, but certaintly up there.
