So that's why Dave Gallagher was the most popular lookup on UMDB the other day!

Watched the extensive SNY post-game,it's great to hear from Smith,Gomez and those guys who are experience this series for the first time,Smith was so wide eyed talking about it....

Wagner - "if you ask me one more fucking question about Joe Smith I swear,he faced one guy,big deal"...big laugh from Wags..he seems to take the piss outta Joe a lot.

I thought Gary and Ron handled Mota being back on the team in a proper manner,Gary especially took the Mets to task over a few things they have said since signing Mota,I can't remember exactly what he said so I won't try to here.

They spent ample time(spread out over a few innings) discussing the issue and certainly didn't let anyone of the hook.

Watched SNYHD again last night and thought that the HD resolution was much better than it was the night before. In fact it was great.

YESHD also has a great picture. Makes Yankee losses even more enjoyable.

Watched the game last night in HD for the first time. The fact that it was on ESPN HD and SNY HD gave me a chance to flip back and forth to compare the two pictures. I didn't think there was a difference in HD quality from one HD channel to the next but wow was there ever. ESPN's was so far superior to SNY's. Mostly apparent from the centerfield camera shot. I tried watching the game on ESPN but the graphics all over the screen combined with Sutcliffe and whoever the hell those other two rednecks in the booth were, made it border on impossible. I watched most of it on SNY even with the lesser quality resolution.

Anyone else ever experience different levels of HD? Is that a usual thing?

From Phil Mushnick's column in today's NY Post:

"One of the comical pleasures Cablevision has consistently provided its customers the last 25 years is its baloney answers to good questions. For example, if Cablevision fails to deliver promised programming you can bet a call to a Cablevision customer service rep (CSR) will produce a ridiculous explanation, one that, naturally, blames everything and everyone except Cablevision.

Tuesday's Giants-Mets on SNY did not appear in HD due to a technical delivery failure from Shea. Fair enough, it was fixed the next day. But a Cablevision CSR, Tuesday, explained Cablevision was "contractually disallowed" to present the game in HD, which was both a ridiculous and typically ridiculous answer."

Good news, and I thought Ron behind home plate was brilliant.

BREAKING NEWS: DARLING AGREES TO EXTENSION

This doesn't exactly come as a shock, but . . . SNY's new president, Steve Raab, announced Thursday that analyst Ron Darling has agreed to a contract extension.

Darling has been a hugely pleasant surprise in his two seasons on the Mets. Just Wednesday night he sat behind home plate at Shea and explained why when a pitcher takes a long time before throwing the ball it usually means it will be a fastball.

It's what analysts are supposed to do: Tell you stuff you never would have known or thought of on your own.

“Ron is a superb baseball analyst, whose work ethic is second to none,” Raab said in a statement. “He has established himself as one of the top analysts in all of Major League Baseball, and we’re thrilled he will continue to be a part of the SNY family for a long time.”

Said Darling in the same statement: “Working with Gary [Cohen], Keith [Hernandez] and the entire SNY crew – while covering an exciting team like the Mets – was a big factor in my staying at the network. I am so happy to be here in New York, and I’m looking forward to calling Mets games on SNY for many years to come.”

By the way, WFAN loves the work Darling has done on the radio as well and would love to expand his role on the station.

I like Darling quite a bit too. He's gotten better since he started IMO.

I agree. Ron does an excellent job. I really like the 3 man booth more than I did in the beginning. It provides a lot more info with Keith handling offensive commentary and Ron handling the pitching than most color booths that only have one ex-player. Early last year it either sounded like they were all talking at once or not talking and trying to stay out of one another's way (with Ron being the quietest). They have really become a great booth.

Does anyone else's sound suck on SNY?

No problem hearing the announcers or anything, but the background crowd-type noise comes through in a rising/falling pattern, sounding somewhat like cars wooshing past your open window on the highway.

It's not something that's sent me running to the radio (like Fran used to do) but it's annoying and occurs almost constantly despite happening on no other channel meaning it's not my TV or my cable system.

I think that has been a problem with SNY from the start,at least for me,YES for instance is much louder on the same volume as SNY is,are they on a rubbish frequency ,how does that work,do our HDTV people has such problems,I'm guessing no,the wankers.

Seth Everett, the "MLB Insider" on the SNY pregame show, was just asked by Matt Yalloff whether the Mets are an elite team in the National League. He responded no they aren't even though they have the best record in the league, that he never thought they were a dominant team and that they are one of the three or four best teams in the league.

So they aren't elite, they have the best record, he didn't think they'd be that great and they're one of the best.

Where does one line up for a job as an MLB Insider?

I saw that G-Faiff,funny stuff from Everett ,Gary tonight mentioned that Ledee was hitting pretty well in AAA so the Mets thought they needed his bat up here,Ron then said that Ledee is one of those old yankees that takes pitches and works the count, where does that kinda shit come from......check the numbers Ron.

Anyone see SNY Spotlight with Seaver?,it was pretty good,I'm sure you all know this this but Seaver in talking about the board in charge at the time said that Gil Hodges didn't even know they traded Nolan Ryan until he was dealt...also he said he had to be dealt in order for that regime to change...that that was the start of a tunr around for the club...

FT: >>>Who is Julie Donaldson<<<

In addition to the above answer, she was also Miss Florida sometime back
in her day. She also looks pretty good in a champagne drenched sweater.
I think that swim suit pic is a little dated, but so aren't we all.

Was a pretty good show. I wish, however, that whoever's responsible for production was as anal about details as I am. When discussing the '69 team, a photo of the '72 team appeared. When going in-depth about his first All-Star game in '67, footage from '68 was used. And it was noted in a graphic that his last All-Star appearance was 1991, pretty neat trick considering he hadn't pitched in the bigs since 1986. Also, there was a SEAVER 41 jersey hanging behind him that was a Sports Authority knockoff and nothing remotely like anything he (or any Met) ever wore.

Too picky? Maybe for a channel that isn't the self-proclaimed home of New York sports let alone home of the Mets. This is Tom Seaver we're talking about here. Get his visuals straight.

As for The Man himself, it was good to see him in the role of immortal instead of broadcaster where he deserved to be appraised like a normal human being. He's not a normal human being. He's Tom Seaver. When he did WB11 games from '99 to '05, I rarely got that feeling. Now in rare TS sightings, I do again. I like that.

Good pick ups Greg,I did notice and was wondering what the ugly Dodger looking Seaver jersey was about, really you should write SNY about the show.

You're not anal about detail (and curse Saturday Night Live for forcing that into common usage), you're accurate and they're sloppily inaccurate. Write them. Apply for work as a writer or producer.

What, in addition to his position as sometimes-commentator? (G-Fafif made an all-too-brief appearance on last Saturday's Mets Weekly, discussing Wally Backman).

Might as well not give it away for free.

Now to turn rationalizer/apologist: If the show in question was on Babe Ruth or Duke Snider, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have been able to tell if they were using the right year's footage over a given anecdote. Perhaps '68 was what was available and they figured young Seaver in an All-Star setting was representative enough even if the first thing I thought when I heard "Anaheim" and saw a Mets home uniform was "hey, that's the Astrodome." I'd mention it to somebody, except the folks who produce "Mets Weekly" are with a separate company while the Seaver interview was an SNY thing and I don't know those guys (though I suppose there's always the "Dear Sirs" option.)

Gwreck: Glad you saw my cameo. I think I'm on again this week when the subject turns to a less-loved late '80s Mets second baseman. (FYI, still doing some writing/consulting for the show; will alert anybody interested when those segments come to light.)

Edgy: "The anal-retentive chef" was one of my all-time favorite bits. Come to think of it, I probably hadn't used that phrase since the loss of Phil Hartman. You're right, though. We shouldn't brush off inaccuracy by blaming ourselves for noticing it.

Does anyone else think that the piped in music at Shea is getting louder,Tuesday night when the Mets were on the come back they played the "let's go Mets" chant over the PA system, except it seemed really freaking loud and a different recording to boot,it sounded like they recorded some numb nut screaming "let's go Mets".It was just awful.

I saw Greg on SNY the other night talking about Felix Millan, and Mark Healey talking about Kevin Mulvey.Mark compared Mulvey's stuff to Brian Bannister(a fourth or fifth type starter)....Greg opined that Millan was the Mets first Latino star.
