Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 Game 1: Carpernter v PeavyScoreless end of the 2nd
A Boy Named Seo Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 Good game, I think. Peavy and Carp both dealing.Props to SD for wearing home whites today and not dark blue or camouflage or whatever other dreck they have hanging in their dressing rooms.
A Boy Named Seo Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 Piazza can't make the play on a tough Pujols pop-up in foul ground. Later in the at bat, Albert smokes a hanging Peavy slider for a 2-run bomb. Another road team looking to steal a game 1 win against the home team's ace.
Guest vtmet Guests Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 that ball that Piazza didn't get was catchable...but as Ms Met used to preach, Piazza's mistakes have never led to giving up runs...
Guest vtmet Guests Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 at least the game isn't boring anymore...after the A's/Twins sleeper, I want to see some offense...
Guest Hillbilly Guests Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 Rolen with a bloop double 2nd and 3rd...

Speaking of which, I loved hearing the ESPN Radio guys go on about running all the time on Piazza. Again, can someone show me stats where gunning down runners was the difference between a team winning and losing?

HahnSolo Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 OK, how'd they get their third run. On Yahoo it says Edmonds singled, then scored on an Encarnacion Sac Fly. How'd he go from first to third?
metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 a runner on second has a greater chance of scoring than a runner on first. a runner on second needn't be driven in on a home run, but can score on other types of batted balls, or can more easliy move to third where he can score without the benefit of a batted ball.a team only needs to lead by one run to win a game. successfully stealing bases increases your chances of leading by that one run or more. unsuccessfully throwing out basestealers likewise decreases your chances of leading by that one run or more.
metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 Top 4TH B:3 S:1 O:0Jim Edmonds singles on a line drive to right fielder Brian Giles. Top 4TH B:2 S:2 O:0Scott Rolen doubles (1) on a soft line drive to right fielder Brian Giles. Jim Edmonds to 3rd. Top 4TH B:1 S:1 O:1Juan Encarnacion out on a sacrifice fly to left fielder Dave Roberts. Jim Edmonds scores.

metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 its certainly overblown. i remember way back in 01 or 02 i played around with teh numbers and i figured that his poor throwing cost the mets a grand total of about 10 runs or so over an entire season. which adds up to what, two, maybe three losses? it was an overblown issue at the time, especially in the contect of a long season. but in a short series, against a team that is equipped to exploit that weakness, the effect could be very appropriately rated. if the mets faced the padres, i would expect us to steal maybe 5 bases per game, and for some of those runners to score. that's where the difference can be made. against a slow, station-to-station team, its less of an impact.
Guest vtmet Guests Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 IMO, Metsmarathon just hit the nail on the head...over the course of the year, probably not a big measurable statistical difference...but IMO, I saw several times a few years ago, where in close games vs the Braves, Bobby Cox had his guys run/bunt on Piazza/Leiter and it was embarrassing just how easy it was for them to exploit the weakness and win by one run...
Guest vtmet Guests Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 I also worry about LoDuca vs the Dodgers runners...Furcal, Lugo and Lofton could exploit LoDuca's arm...
Guest Hillbilly Guests Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 Pads leave 'em load in the 7th. 5-1 cards. Bailed out by a great defensive play.
Guest vtmet Guests Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 Pad's #1 & #2 hitters: 5 for 7 with a double and triple;#3 & #4 hitters (Gonzo & Piazza): 0 for 8 (none leaving the infield);Lack of hitting with men on base yielding only 1 run for the Pads...a double and 2 triples, yet only 1 run?
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 Piazza should have caught that ball at the backstop,he didn't and it extended the AB for Pujols who then homered....
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2006 Author Posted October 3, 2006 ESPN had a reporter in the stands who happened to be right behind the screen where that popup was. He claims that the ball hit the screen coming down which is what made it come down behind Piazza.
Guest Rotblatt Guests Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 Not only did these announcers suck ass, whomever was responsible for the cuts was just fucking awful. They missed the first pitch in practically every inning I watched. A batter would hit the ball and they follow the runner half the time instead of the ball, which meant I missed a great diving stop by Polanco (they did show it on a replay) . . .Inexcusable. Am I spoiled by SNY or was the game yesterday particularly bad?

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted October 5, 2006 Author Posted October 5, 2006 I'm surprised too although the backup Josh Bard - the guy traded to and then re-acquired from the BoSox - has had himself a good year.
