Naming the new Stadium.

We had this thread last year I think, anyway over the past several days I've read in local newspapers how the Mets should" do the right thing" and name the new stadium after Jackie Robinson, now that the USTA has spurned millions and named the tennis center after Billie Jean King the media seem to think that the Mets should too,King thinks they should name it after Robinson.

My problem with this is that although Rosinson did great things for the game he never played for the Mets.I dunno I just think if the Mets don't take the money(they will) then there are more worthy people to name the stadium after.

It seems to me that some in the media are looking to the Mets to honour the legacy of Robinson, but MLB does that every year.

Hodges or Murphy Field at (insert ever changing corporate name here) Stadium.

I vote for MetLife to be the first corporate sponsor. It just seems natural.

There was a lot of discussion on the Mike and the Mad Dog show yesterday about which NY baseball fans became Mets fans. Russo (flying solo yesterday) said they were folks who had originally rooted for the NY Giants, and added that Brooklyn fans became Yankee fans.

He could not have been more wrong. The Giants had, at one point, been a successful, winning franchise. Those fans (who wanted to root for a National League team) either followed the fortunes of their old team on the West Coast (for a while, SF games were broadcast bask to NY) or gravitated to another NL team (there were rumors at the time that the Reds would be moving to New York). Besides, Yankee Stadium is only one additional subway stop away from the Polo Grounds where the Giants had played. It was geographically reasonable that Manhattanites (and other Giant fans) would look toward the Bronx to fill their baseball needs.

On the other hand, the Brooklyn team had a long history of being loveable losers. It was very natural that they took to the early Mets in droves. And Brooklyn is closer to Queens (the home of the Mets) than is the Bronx.

What has this got to do with the naming of the new stadium?
Plenty.

Owner Fred Wilpon had been a Brooklyn Dodger fan. So much so that the new Mets ballpark has been designed to have the "look and feel" of Ebbitts Field. He doesn't need the extra royalty money. Jackie, being the person who broke the color line, was to many the very reason many New Yorkers became fans of the National League in general, and specifically fans of the Brooklyn Dodgers. (I remember reading a demographic study conducted at the time) And it is for that reason that I believe he will name it after Jackie Robinson, without any associated Corporate name.

But the Wilpons have said they will look for a corporate sponsor.

Then I guess the one you linked is a sgood as any.
Or Met Life.

sigh
I hope he doesn't. Jackie Robinson Stadium at __________ Park will water down any intended tribute.

I guess what I really want to know is there is need for a tribute, wouldn't honoring Kiner or Murphy be a better tribute.

I think stuff like Jackie should be honored in the new stadium, but with some-
thing a lot more low key than naming the whole park after a Dodger. While I feel
a small kinship to the Brooklyn team because my Mother used to share memories
of being a fan with her father - I think the Mets have enough history at this point
on their own not to be draggin' the Dodgers into it, who let's face it, fucked NY.

A more interesting disucssion to me would be who else should be honored? By
honored I mean with statues or walkways and thoroughfares. Gates maybe?
The corporate sponsor is inevitable ... it's big bucks!

Shea, Seaver, Gil, Casey, Kiner, Murphy ... who else?

I'm with KC on this,Wilpon could generate $10 million a year for naming rights,Murph,Kiner and Nelson should be honored,Pete Flynn should have the grounds shed named after him.

Nelson too ... my bad ... Gary Cohen is gonna be so jealous.

Then, as a tribute to the history of New York Baseball, I'd want Casey Stengel Field.
And, it would be a kick in the arse to that "team of tradition" that plays in the Bronx. George would have a fit.

Agreed that Flynn deserves something too, and I don't mean Doug.

Mrs. Payson should be honored. If Bill Shea was honored by the first stadium for bringing National League baseball back to New York, Mrs. Payson should be honored by the new one.

Young man, you should be ashamed!

They should put that Payson logo on all the concession cups ... what a hottie.

No way a stadium should be named after a woman...

Perhaps we could just name the dugouts after her ;)

if you really want george to have a fit, install a "steinbrenner alley"

as the urinal trough in a dirty mens room.

(was that too mean?)

slightly tangential - i hate urinal troughs. whoever came up with that idea should be hung.
