Guest ScarletKnight41 Guests Posted August 9, 2006 Posted August 9, 2006 I've been dying to see this film, and it's finally opening in Princeton this weekend. I'm starting the poll in anticipation of seeing it on Friday night - I can't wait!
Guest ScarletKnight41 Guests Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 We saw the film this evening, and really loved it. I don't want to give anything about it away, but it is the most original story about family dynamics that I have ever seen. It is hysterically funny, unpredictable, and very entertaining. It was worth the wait, and I recommend it highly.
Guest sharpie Guests Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 I saw it on Saturday. Yes, very funny, well worth seeing.
Vic Sage Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2006 Posted August 21, 2006 really good. Steve Carrell is terrific. sort of a cross between WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE, National Lampoon's VACATION, and Ashby's SMILE.
Guest Rotblatt Guests Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 Absolutely loved this movie. The casting overall was great, I thought--I loved Steve Carrell, the little girl, the son & the grandfather . . .So, yeah, great casting! Like Scarlet said, the plot was unpredictible and fun and it managed to be moving at the same time . . . An all-around good time.
Guest ScarletKnight41 Guests Posted November 26, 2006 Posted November 26, 2006 This will come out on DVD on December 19th. Just in time for Christmas/Chanukah gift giving
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted January 2, 2007 Posted January 2, 2007 I have new respect for Steve Carell. This was fantastic.
Guest Johnny Dickshot Guests Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 You people completely overhyped this.Sidesplitting, satisfying, surprising, original, uplifting finish-- but wasn't the rest of it right out of a bad TV sitcom? Did it bother anyone else that Mom takes the wheel solely to provide the filmmakers with a broken car? And that the ensuing mechanic scene was all about making the car work but only in the most slapsticky way possible? Or that Carrell encounters his rival in a gas station? Or that the hospital chick and the pageant matron were the exact same character?Good heart, one extremely funny scene, loaded with dumb contrivances and devices. I'm giving it 6 stars.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 Good heart there, but the contrivances were falling from the ceiling and hitting me in the head. Why, for instance, if a car needs to be push-started and jumped into third gear, does the seven-year-old get out and push? 'Cause it's funny! And why does the seven-year-old run and jump in instead of an adult grabbing her and jumping in with her? Look at her run --- its cute!A car stalls out if you drop under 15 in third gear. Fifteen is sprinting speed for a healthy adult.Speaking of 15, what Nietzche-reading 15-year-old (and I can stop there but I won't) with so much contempt for the world that he's refusing to talk can honestly expect more than a laugh in applying for the Air Force Academy? Last I checked, you needed a member of Congress to endorse your application. They usually endorse citizenly-type honor students with good teeth and emotional stabilty, not wannabe members of the trenchcoat mafia.Unless that schmuck of a Dad of his was a Medal of Honor-winner, Olive had a far better shot in the pageant than he has at ever seeing Colorado Springs. And they stole a dead body and drove around with it... har! I've only seen that a bunch of times. National Lampoon productions. Todd Zeile productions.Nonetheless it was far better than Cinderella Man. Now if somebody will meet me in that thread and tell me why you recommended that one....
soupcan Old-Timey Member Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 Liked it. Overhyped - yesOne (hugely) funny scene - yesSteve Carrel is awesome - yes
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted March 25, 2007 Posted March 25, 2007 Finally saw this last night, and agree with all of Edgy's points. We enjoyed it, laughed, but yeah, it did seem contrived. And I don't know that there's any way the little girl deserved any kind of acting award nomination.
