I had no idea

Jose and Javier Valentin, brothers.

I would have known that 30 years ago when I was collecting baseball cards. Now, even with the internet at my fingertips, I'm a dinosaur.

I just learned that last nite too.

In related news, I impulsively bought 2 packs of baseball cards yesterday at the Target check out (1 for me, 1 for the kid).

I got David Wright.

Funny. I had a baseball card experience this weekend as well. We went to visit my parents, who are doing some extensive renovation. They had moved some stuff out to the garage and I shrieked in horror when I realized that one of the things they had moved were a box of my old baseball cards.

After rescuing the box, I looked through my binder full of cards I thought were good enough to be stored in plastic. There were a couple of future hall of famers there (Puckett, Gwynn, Rickey, etc). But there were also quite a few who didn't quite pan out. (Ben McDonald, Matt Nokes, Kevin Maas, Eric Anthony). I was thinking I probably wouldn't have made a very good scout.

To top things off, I looked through some of the piles I had dumped into shoeboxes...cards that I deemed not worthy of preservation. And promptly found the rookie cards of a few nobodies named Glavine and Smoltz. And some lanky Expos pitcher named Johnson.

I have 18 Gregg Jefferies rookie cards.

Bastard. I'd probably just get Jose Oquendo.

I also learned of this yesterday evening.

Today I learned Dickshot is a filcher, siphoning all the best cards off of his unassuming infant.

I haven't bought a pack of cards in a while, the closest place packed up and moved away.

Although I guess it's quitting while I'm ahead, one of the last cards I remember getting was a voucher for a Pujols autographed-bat chip card (as in, the bat chip itself in the card is autographed).

I likes it good.

It's a strangely speculative marketplace.

Just like how sometimes you never can predict who will get the most daily hits on the UMDB.
