Yeah well, anyone can be a smartypants blogcritic.

I got no problem with stretching out Madsen -- it's not as if his turns at bat came with runners in scoring position, and no need for dramatic conniptions when the guy gives you 7 fucking scoreless innings -- "they got a guy on second -- take him out for god sakes!" Whatever.

That said, Manuel sure seemed to screw his pooch by doubleswitching out Pat the Bat (I suppose his D tempts you every night!) and Bell.

Winning xtra inning games on the road is difficult biz. What can you say?

"I Need A" = WWSB

Rollins = Reyes

My guess, although not evidenced from this column, is that Howard = Wright.

We NL East fans are not so different from each other.

That bloggy guy hasn't even got an argument if Franklin doesn't cough up a homer -- on a 2-out, 0-2 pitch IIRC -- to a non-homer-hitter.

I agree about Madson (we should be keeping track of how many different ways we've spelled his name just in this thread alone).
It's not like Manuel had a ton of options at that point. Only closer Tom Gordon was left (Cormier = unavailable) and I doubt he's been stretched out over more than 2 innings in at least a decade. If Madson was PH'd for and Gordon brought in and the game continues - Then What? The alternative was to use Gordon earlier but then he's open to criticism of burning his closer in a tie game on the road. Willie had the advantage there.

And even though the HR was hit, he still doesn't really have an argument, since that pitch almost bounced.

And the pitcher threw him a big bending curve that has had Reyes screwing himself into the ground lately.

Speedy leadoof types can sometimes golf those low inside pitches. Many of them are switch-hitters who naturally hit right and that's the most natural part of their swing batting lefty while their opening up and turning toward first. Hernandez pointed out that he looked like Mookie.

It's kind of puncher's luck when it happens, though. The baseball fairies were kind last night.

Two things. One, Reyes certainly can be a quite a "leadoof" hitter. (Not criticizing, just amused.) Two, that Mookie corkscrew swing always made me laugh.

Amazing stat: Phils starter Gavin Floyd and reliever Ryan Madsen BOTH topped 100 pitches in this game. wow.
