How many would trade David Wright for Willis and Cabrera straight up today, with no guarantees of anything other than that the deal will be taken off the table forever if you don't sign the papers right this second?

I took no. I don't like Dontrell's delivery and I think he's a long term risk.
I like Miguel, who doesn't? But if the Mets want him to play the outfield
(yes, I think he's a better outfielder than an infielder ... gasp) they can
sign him as a FA.

There are certain players that an organization just simply don't trade.
David Wright is one of them, and I don't care what the fantasy stats say
about that on 4/15/2006. I may change my mind on 5/16/2006 and anyone
who cares to (though I can't imagine why they would) can archive that.

This is a no-brainer, I think, if you throw in their choice of any pitcher in the Mets' organization, that's how much of a no-brainer the just-Wright deal is.

Who would they take? Pedro? If they could afford Pedro they wouldn't be dealing Dontrelle.

Bannister? Well, someone's got to lose a rotation spot if the Mets get Dontrelle. Buh-bye.

Zambrano? Good riddance.

Humber? Got to give to get.

And I believe I'm Wright's biggest fan on the CPF, so this isn't about his ability. It's about "Do you want the Mets to get better or not?" Sometimes I think I'm the only loyal Mets fan on this site.

If Wright was guaranteed to sign when he hits free agency, but you have no guarantees of resigning Willis and Cabrera, would you make the trade?

I wouldn't, because it seems like putting all your eggs in one basket for this year. George would love to throw money at those guys and steal them away from the Mets if we picked them up in a trade. Especially with Sheffield heading out and Randy and Mussina decomposing.

It's just too risky. Wright ain't going anywhere.

We can make our bid for those guys when free agency comes up.

Exactly. If I'm the most loyal Mets fan on this site, meaning I'm the one person who actually approves of things that would help the Mets while all the rest of you (except for 4 others, I guess) are favoring plans that would worsen the team, what does that tell you about Mets fans in general? That they like losing? That they have to think long and hard about whether having one excellent 23 year old star is better than having two excellent 23 year old stars, and finally coming up with the wrong answer? That they don't know the difference between loyalty (to a homegrown player who, like Fonzie and Straw, could easily decide to leave the nest in four more years) and developing the team? Hell, David Wright's family would endorse this trade, if they were real Mets fans.

This is another stupid deal, stupid only in that the Marlins could easily get more for Willis and Cabreara as a package, so it ain't happening, but the colossal arrogance of Mets fans to say "No, we need more" to an incredibly sweet deal just speaks volumes about the reasons I have such contempt for this organization and its dumbest, most "loyal" fans, who richly deserve the team they've gotten for the last five years.

That kind of honesty is often disguised in long tedious explanations of what I'm saying about baseball. You'd be hard pressed to state what exactly I'm saying that's ass-like, but that's okay. Why don't you start a poll with the same neutral wording and see how the voting comes out when it has nothing to do with me, or a referendum on my Met-hating character? This is really a strange phenonomen. Both Willis and Cabrera are eligible for free agency after 2009.

Wright is eligible for free agency after 2010.

You all are absolutely completely batshit crazy if you don't think 8 combined years of Cabrera and Willis is worth more than 5 years of Wright.

The only reason Florida might be willing to make such a stupid move would be because they would get one more non-arbitration eligible year from Wright than they would from Willis & Cabrera, who are going to set records when they are eligible.

Figure it's a savings of $20M for them in 2007 unless they managed to sign them to backloaded contracts that bought out their arb-eligible years.

Doubtful unless they manage to get a new stadium or move somewhere.
