Bench and DL Size

before we make a poll how about some discussion on bench/dl size because there are so many options...

i'd like to go with a 6 man bench (making the rosters 25 men with our 19 starters) i'd also like a large DL, i hate guys getting screwed by injuries.

Bench of 6, no DL. I had ten guys on the DL at one point last season in my other league; but this league is waaaaaaaaaay too thin to allow it, IMHO.

Bench of 6 works for me. I'm not sure I'd like no DL at all, but no more than two given the league size.

i think even with a large bench you need 2 DL spots because while a guy out 15 days might come off your bench its pretty unfair to have to bench a guy who is out 2 months (and at the same time bad for the league if its a good player who gets dropped).... 6 and 2 sounds fine to me

I vote for no DL. 19 starters, 6 bench, 20 teams is a ton of spots already. Yes, you'll have a tough decision on a roster space if someone goes out for two months. I like a league where those tough decisions have to be made, and not one where you can just hide six injured players on your roster while still having six other bench players available for use.

what happens when multiple guys get hurt at once though? i don't mind a DL-player on the bench but to force someone to carry one in their active lineup just so they wont have to drop him seems pretty absurd to me.

Sucks for you. You're arguing here that we need DL spots for those occassions when there are more injured players on your roster at one time than there are bench spots. I don't think we need contingencies for those occassions when a 25 man roster has 7 players on the DL.

Realistically, you're not going to have seven all-stars on the DL; the league is too thin for that. You're bound to have one random fourth outfielder who's on the DL but isn't worth sticking around on your bench; you're going to drop him and pick up an active guy. I still say no DL.

i still think a DL is a good idea but as long as the bench is 6 men its not as big a deal as it would be if the bench was smaller...
i'll go along with the "no dl" crowd provided that its a 6 man bench...
any further thouhgts...??

Six man bench, plus the ability to place two starters on the DL and pick up additional free agents to fill in seems fine to me. WHen the guy on the DL comes off the list, you have to cut somebody.

I assume we'll have unlimited right during the season to cut players and pick up free agents, right? The DL rule is just so you can pick up a player to replace an injured player without having to cut the injured player.

Uh, you're forgetting that given the depth of the league, an "average" starter is worth as much as an All-Star in a normal league. Hell, just having a roster full of guys who play every day will put you in the upper third of this league. So having to drop a couple of those average starters because there's no DL can really hurt.

I think it would be a terrible handicap to have no DL spots--we should have two at an absolute minimum.

If roster size is an issue, let's limit the bench spots to 5 so we can keep the DL slots available. That way, everyone's inconvenienced by it, not just the poor guys who end up with a bunch of players on the DL.

Right... but what I'm saying is that you're not going to have to drop that injured everyday player. You're going to clear a roster spot by dropping a backup shortstop who never plays.

Well, sure, if you're stupid enough to draft a backup shortstop who never plays AND only 1 guy goes down on the DL. Throughout last season, I probably had at least 2 players on the real DL (not the same 2, for the most part) from about May on, and at one point, I had 4 decent guys on the DL, and had to cut most of my back-ups, even WITH a 2-man DL and a 5-man bench.

Remember, our 6-man bench includes pitchers--it's not just hitters. I'd be shocked if we didn't each carry at least two extra pitchers on our bench (possibly more), leaving 4 slots for back-ups for your injury-prone players and/or for guys with upside. That's plenty, but only if no one on your team goes on the DL.

Operating without a DL is madness. Again, I would much rather see us cut the bench to 5 and allow 2 DL slots if the size of the bench is an issue.

I can pretty much guarantee you that as the season progresses, no one will be happy with a DL-less system.

This is the way Ive always done it and I second DD.

One thing I was amazed about when first getting into fantasy baseball was the frequency of injuries throughout the league.

i've set the bench to six and the dl to one on the site incase i forget to do anything before we draft (at which time i won't be able to change anything.) this topic is still open to discussion though.

also it looks like the last 2 teams never signed up so thats an additional 40 or so players that won't be drafted.

i'm not even sure from this thread what options to put in the poll.

Of those who have commented, only one guy seems to want a 5 man bench as opposed to 6. (6 also makes more sense, in my mind, as it allows you a backup at each of the 6 "positions" at which players are likely to be eligible: C, CI, MI, OF, SP, RP)
if we start from the premise of a six man bench and vote only on 0, 1, or 2 DL spots i think this all becomes alot more manageable... so i'm putting up a poll on DL slots (0, 1, or 2) make your votes based on the assumption of a 6-man bench but realize that the bench size may come up for a vote if there are more than one or two objections to it.
