According to the 2:40 update on WFAN, the Mets got Tike Redman - for cash.

There's the backup centerfielder, one who is several decades younger than G. Williams.

What's not to like? (Other than his awful OBP)?

I'm head over heels over this. No foolin'. Tike Redman has been slapping us around for however long he's been in the big leagues. He was right in the middle of that Friday night debacle at PNC. I refuse to look up any statistics to disturb my perception that he's hitting .877 against us lifetime. I'm sure it's true.

Tike Redman can't hurt us anymore. Except, perhaps, from within.

Gerald Williams' career OPS+ = 82, a figure he hadn't reached since 2000. Tike can prolly catch the ball better than Gerald and he's a lefty. Plus, his name is Tike. All of these things make him better.

Yeah I'm not too excited over Tike, though he sorta fits my definition of a career switching young veteran as detailed in the Collier thread.

Plus he's an above average CFer and OK runner, which are also Collier qualifiers, so I guess I'm good for him being this year's Gerald Williams.

And his 9th most similar to age 28 is Baby Doll Jacobson who later went 19-97-.318 at age 33 for the '25 Browns and then hit .341 the next year. I expect great things from Tike. May he be a Baby Doll!

Well, I was close about the other stuff.

We needed a lefty outfielder who could play all three positions, and while Tike might not be a great hitter, he should fill the role adequately at basically no cost.

So the bench at present is Tike, Nady, Castro, Woodward, and an infielder to be determined. It's looking less and less likely that Eric Valent will get another chance in the majors as a Met. Hopefully he'll latch on elsewhere.
