Piazza DL'd - DeFelice up

I assume this means that Jacobs is still around?

I understand Willie's reluctance to use him behind the plate; between the shoulder injury that forced him to miss most or all of 2004 and his 1st base trials this year he's played very little behind the plate for nearly 2 years now. Plus, he wasn't considered a defensive whiz before all that.

But this does put him in the position to see some 1st base/PH time.

I read Willie does not want to use jacobs, and this i dont really understand.
The Mets could use a unknown quotent bat here, one that a pitcher has no book on, and that kid has great numbers minors wise.
I guess they dont want to put the kid in under such pressure.

If Willie doesn't feel comfortable using Jacobs, then the kid should be back in Norfolk. There's nothing to be gained in having him collect a buttful of splinters on the bench. Play him or bring up someone you will play.

Gary Cohen mentioned on the pre-game that the Mets have signed Alberto Castillo who will report to Norfolk.

Down by six in the first kind of alleviates that-- get this kid some ABs.

Again, what I think you're reading is about Willie's aversion to using him as a catcher. He was called here as a backup plan while it was unknown whether Piazza needed to be DL'd, and what complicates things is that you're always reluctant to PH w/your only spare backstop for all the obvious reasons.

Now that he's a true emergency catcher and not the main backup, those PH & possibly 1B appearances are easier to give out (hence his AB today). That Castillo was signed might mean that he's more likely to stay up, or, if he's not, then he'll likely be exchanged for another bat (Valent, Daubach?) to play the same role.

Jacobs showed today he can hit a ML pitch, do we give him a start in favor of the Anderson/Offerman jamboree?

And with that homer Jacobs said, "Fuck you Scarlet!"

Fine - good for him <g>

He was pretty talkative while rounding the bases ;)

From nymets.com

]Randolph said that Jacobs' significant share of work at first base this season made him a little uneasy in using the 24-year-old rookie behind the plate, even though Jacobs has only caught and served as a designated hitter at Double-A since Aug. 4.

Turns out ex-Met Alberto Castillo din't sign with the Mets, he signed with the A's, Gary and Howie are confused about this one because it was apparently true that he did sign.

nymets.com:

]Piazza said he hopes to be able to "take light swings this weekend," but he remains uncertain whether he will be able to play Wednesday when he is eligible to come off the disabled list. Piazza characterized the condition of his right wrist -- he had a hairline fracture of a bone that connects to the pinky -- as "cranky."

I don't look for Piazza to play much more this year. Just a hunch

"cranky"?

Interesting choice of words.

I don't remember my pinkie ever crying or speaking to me.

Don't forget, this is the same man who described his groin as snapping like a guitar string. *shudders*
