Because a runaway contest is just a state of mind.

Delgado's been pretty sweet this season, I gotta say. For all that, though, Flordia's only 1.5 games ahead of us. . . And if Dougie's really turning it around (and not just thriving away from Shea, which is what I'm thinking), then I'll be a happy camper with the move to acquire Mientkiewicz.

Actually, I'll be happy either way, since I think it was a good risk to take.

Hey, I hear the Sox are shopping Petaigne (or whatever the hell his name is). Why not trade for him and hit the Sox 1B trifecta?

I jest, mostly, since we don't really need all three of them, but I do like his upside.

How quickly Delgado rebounded after that slow start.

What's the fielding comparison like?

Delgado
FPCT .991 (8th in league), RF 9.69 (6th), ZR .828 (2nd)
Mientkiewicz
FPCT .994 (T 12th), RF 9.82 (9th), ZR .915 (12th)

These are unreliable, but it looks like Mientkiewicz is one of the better defenders and Delgado one of the poorer--pretty much as expected, I think.

With such big gaps between the two right now, maybe weekly updates is the way to go.

How much movement could there have been since Friday?

Doug did just get his 300th career RBI.

He means injury update I think. Let;s hope its nothing worse than a case of "Johnson Disease"

]Doug Mientkiewicz left yesterday's game because of a right hamstring injury, and the first baseman said he's definitely out for tonight as well.

Mientkiewicz hurt himself while stretching before his first at-bat. He stayed in the game through the fourth inning but felt the hamstring "burn" when he covered first base on Derek Jeter's groundout in the second inning.

"It felt like someone shot me," Mientkiewicz said. Brian Daubach replaced him in the fifth.

Asked if he could play tonight (Sunday) Mienty replied; "not a chance".

P.S. Maybe the title of this thread should be changed to;
Mientkiewicz vs Delgado: Stillborn - because that's about what the
"competition" is at this point.

Yeah, no reason to be like that. I think we all have our perspective in this regard.

Offerman will be another old-and-going-nowhere type - a la Gerald
Williams - that Met fans will complain about just for his very existance.
He can slap the ball a bit and play a variety of positions including 1st
( although none of them particularly well) and - as far as I know - still run.

Brazell's hurt and would be less of the back of the bench type option
anyway. Does Willie have the guts to start Diaz at 1st against the lefty?
It would make sense since otherwise you'd need to go w/either the lefty
swinging Daubach or Woodward which puts the lefty Anderson at 2nd.
Either that or it's Offerman right off the bat.

Well Anderson is starting tonight at second batting 9th, so I guess Woody is the 1st baseman.

Offerman hasn't seen much use this at all. He didn't report to Norfolk until a week or two ago because he had been assigned to extended spring training. He has only nine AAA appearances.

Offerman's a better bet to be productive than Williams. Offerman's always shown an ability to get on base - .361 career OBP, going .363 with Minnesota last year. Williams has never produced those numbers, topping .350 only once in his career.

7.3 VORP last year in Minny.

Roberto Petagine? I liked his upside 7-10 years ago when the mets had him and didn't give him enough of a shot for my taste. right now he's a bit old and not worth going after.

The Sox have had Petagine since before the season started, so I suspect that if he looked all that good that the Sox wouldn't have gone chasing Olerud all over the country and waiting for him to heal and then get back in shape. Both - if playing well - bring about the same sort of skills: lefty stick, good glove, decent power, good eye, zero speed. Sounds like they liked what they DIDN'T have more than what they did.
The guy who would have been a good backup for this team from the start is Tony Clark - but at this point he's getting too much playing time in Arizona.

Speaking of Olerud, I saw him hit his first Boston HR the other day and David Ortiz greeted him with that hugging thing that the Sox do. Man it's tough to look more white than Oly did trying to bond with Big Papi.

IMO, the Sox signed both Petagine and Olerud for the same reason they signed Giambi & Ortiz--they like to have depth. 1 of 2 has a better chance of breaking out than 1 of 1.

Anyway, they're shopping Petagine because there's an out in his contract if he isn't on the big-league club by June 30 (I think). (as an aside, I guess I that makes me pretty far off base with Strickland on 2 counts. He still hasn't pitched at Round Rock, by the way.).

Petagine's AAA numbers:
.338 AVG/.446 OPS/.689 SLG/1.135 OPS with 12 HR in 148 AB.

I'm still only half-serious, but it wouldn't hurt to see what Theo's looking for. If we can get him for not much, it wouldn't hurt. And Jesus, I'd rather have Petagine than Offerman . . .

I wish we had called Valent, actually. He's been hitting much better lately.

You know who must be cursing his luck? Craig Brazell.
Here was a chance for him to come up to the majors and play for a while to finally show what he can/ can't do.
So, naturally, he's on the Norfolk DL with a broken hand.

Willie seems to have an infielder's prejudice. He'll play his middle infielders at first, in left, right, and center, but he won't play his outfielders (or Piazza) at first. Even Valent, who played 27 games at first last year, didn't get to appear at first in 2005, despite Mientkiewicz's struggles.

Happened to see one of th eout of town games on ESPN and noticed an old friend.

Tony Clark is with the Snakes, performing at a .324/.353/.630 clip in 66games, 173 AB.
His other numbers are 12D, 1T, 13 HR and 47 RBI.

At the time we got Scrabble, Clark was also a free agent, and I said that I wanted the Mets to sign him. He is also a professional (fielding) first baseman, so the defensive difference wasn't as dramatic as the Delgado comparisons. And the price was right (under $2 million).

Ah, 20-20 hindsight.
