Edgy MD Site Manager Posted May 14 Posted May 14 Here's to squeeze plays folks. Among the more neglected plays in baseball. The Hot Corner 1
Chad ochoseis Old-Timey Member Posted May 14 Posted May 14 That was pretty. I still have an early 70s Mets fan love of small ball, even if it doesn't usually make sense in 2026.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted May 14 Posted May 14 I think it makes more sense than is generally appreciated, it's just ... nobody really feels comfortable doing it.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted May 14 Posted May 14 And McLean out for the seventh. Keep your jets cooled, Tobias Myers.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted May 14 Posted May 14 Man, it's a good think the Mets fired Carlos Mendoza before this series and replaced him with whoever's running this team now. Chad ochoseis 1

My college coach absolutely loved the safety squeeze and "suicide" squeeze plays. It was a prominent part of our team's offense. He made sure we could all bunt effectively. When we took batting practice, each of us generally got 15-18 strikes. We were not allowed to swing the bat until we laid down 3 "good bunts".* We all wanted to swing the bat, so we quickly learned that it was to our advantage to lay down 3 good bunts in as few strikes as possible, so we could start hitting. *A good bunt was not in the popped up, not foul, not back to the pitcher, and not right in front of the plate. The coach determined if your bunts were good or not. He later instituted a bonus in which we got one extra swing if we got 3 good bunts down in 3 strikes. MFS62 1

The Hot Corner Old-Timey Member Posted May 14 Posted May 14 Break out the Brooms! The Mets get their first series sweep of the season.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted May 14 Posted May 14 Some life yet, let's go Mets , get those brooms ready( hopefully)
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted May 14 Posted May 14 Rare day game at the ballpark for me. AJ Hinch got ejected after the play at third which to my eyes was clearly one that should have been overturned. Of course arguing with the field umpires after a replay call might seem pointless, but all the umpires do a shift in the replace center during the season, and when it’s so clearly wrong, I can see some value in remaining the ump here that you expect better from him when it’s his turn there. Ewing’s homer was pretty. 7 more wins to go to reach .500 …

Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted May 14 Posted May 14 This is the kind of baseball I'd hoped they would be playing. But they have to keep doing it for a sustained period and I don't know if they have it in them. We've seen flashes of offense followed by games they score 1 run on three hits. MFS62 1
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted May 14 Posted May 14 Feeling better going into the MFY series at least
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted May 15 Posted May 15 Benge and Ewing are making Polanco and Robert irrelevant

Well, yeah, of course they have to keep doing it. And of course it is unknown if that will transpire. On the other hand, they are 8-4 in May after the ball-kickingest of Aprils. And they'd done it mostly without power until yesterday, which is the way to get this offense on a roll. Develop your plate discipline, reward the guys who show that discipline with playing time and promotions, and waiting pitchers out, until eventually you get (a) get to see good pitchers give in and throwing you cookies, and (b) the lesser pitchers on the staff rolled out as series progress.
