I think you have to cut bait on all three of them. Peterson is 30 and he isn't going to get better, and his $8M is not such a salary hit that it kills you. Manaea's $19mx2 is worse, admittedly, but he's shot. Senga's at $14M this year and next.

Call up Tong and let him learn on the job like Benge. The rotation becomes Peralta/McLean/Holmes/Tong and Scott, I guess? Edwards is a starter too, but he's 34 and not a future piece. You could use Myers as a #5 if you want Tong or Scott to simmer in Syracuse, but I see no reason to do that at this point.

Unfortunately, Tong is only pitching slightly more effectively for Syracuse than Senga, Manaea, and Peterson are for the Mets.

Good point.  I just hate to essentially concede a season this early, but by all appearances this is a good time to start looking toward and building for the future.  There appears to be very little life in this team.

If we're going to suck, let the kids play. I'd rather get excited about a young Nick Morabito maybe hitting .180 then watching 34-year-old Austin Slater ground out weakly to second base in a big spot.

Well, Peterson's gone, Senga's been a mediocre reliever (5.34 ERA since transitioning into the role) and Manaea, well he's been actually pretty solid. Not great, but solid. Since early May, his ERA is 4.27. He's walked just 33 in 122 1/3 innings. He allowed just 116 hits. The longball's been a bit of a problem, but outside of that, I can't say I'm unimpressed, based on what I thought the year was gonna be for him.

I think Senga has some hope as a reliever moving forward, at least enough not to just drop him.  Manaea could be the fifth starter on a winning team.  I wouldn't expect more than that, and I wouldn't wait if I think Tong or another younger pitcher is better, but he's worth something.  He got lucky enough in 2024 that the extension was clearly overpaying-- and you didn't need to be an analytics expert to see that, you just needed to read Fangraphs -- but Manaea's here, he's under team control, and he's not going to kill the team if expectations are kept reasonable.
