Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted January 13 Posted January 13 From time to time I see some buzz that the Mets may consider signing Max Scherzer or Justin Verlander to a one-year contract. Estimates are that either would be willing to sign for a "mere" $15 million. Much less, of course, than the $40+ million they got last time around.I'd be surprised if this happened, but given the way this offseason is going I suppose a lot of things are possible.
Cowtipper Old-Timey Member Posted January 13 Posted January 13 (edited) I think there's some unfinished business. I think it would be cool in what looks like will be an underwhelming 2026. Edited January 13 by Cowtipper
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 13 Posted January 13 One year gambits certainly beat five-year gambits.
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted January 13 Posted January 13 If the Mets are looking for one-year starters, I’d have to think there are cheaper/younger options. Like an Alex Cobb, or a Zack Littell.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 13 Posted January 13 Littel may have as many 2025 wins in his arm as Verlander or Scherzer, but I wouldn't bet on Cobb.
Marshmallowmilkshake Old-Timey Member Posted January 13 Posted January 13 Assuming they bring in an ace, like Valdez or Peralta, that's still getting to be a crowded rotation. Scherzer or Verlander, to me, would be taking the place of an end-of-the-rotation guy. I'm sure Sproat or Scott or Tong would go in a trade if that's how we get an ace. Not sure what they can do with Senga. But it's still getting crowded there! Imported aceMcLaneManaeaHolmesPetersonSengaPossibles:SproatScottTong
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted January 13 Author Posted January 13 As last season demonstrated, it's hard to ever feel that you have enough starting pitcher options. It almost seems like you need twelve starters to protect your changes of having five available at any given time.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 13 Posted January 13 And that is hard, because if you really are out to stockpile 12 good options, multiple members of that group of 12 are going to have guaranteed contracts. In that sense, the Mets — with four good options with less than a season of work — are in better shape than many or most. And still they could use another, and maybe another. One thing is that the Mets presumably have a much better picture of how good a bet Senga is.But if they are going to get one of these two Hall-of-famers and then go out and give them three- and four-inning starts, Imma be pissed.
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted January 14 Posted January 14 If this were 2019, maybe, but it's not. Move along, please.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 14 Posted January 14 Age don't bother me on one-year deals.I'll take Bill Lee on a one-year deal.
