Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2025 Posted August 15, 2025 When the Mets bring up a highly rated prospect, there's always the potential that he'll be the last player to wear whatever uniform number is assigned to him. Given that, the number should be chosen with care.So what number should Nolan McLean be assigned?I looked at the current numerical roster at https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/NYM/2025-uniform-numbers.shtmlThe most suitable numbers that are unclaimed (and unretired) seem to be 21, 26, 40, and 45. I've seen photos of McLean in a number 13 Mets jersey, but that's currently assigned to Luis Torrens. Other good numbers are currently assigned to less prominent players who are currently inactive, such as 19 (Jose Siri), 29 (Jared Young), 30 (Hayden Senger), 32 (Max Kranick), 33 (A.J. Minter), 49 (Chris Devenski).I'd give him 30. It was the number that belonged to the only other Met pitcher named Nolan, and he turned out pretty well.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2025 Posted August 15, 2025 Do we have any confirmation whether or not he was named after Nolan Ryan? If he was, 30 is a natural. If not, I picture him as a number 45 kinda' guy.Later

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted August 15, 2025 Posted August 15, 2025 Thirty-four and thirty would certainly be my first two proposals.
stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2025 Posted August 15, 2025 Google search isn’t coming up with and Ryan-McLean connections so it is doubtful.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted August 15, 2025 Posted August 15, 2025 Indeed so.I am impressed at how quickly he made it to the majors. He has had to shed a lot. He was a football star in high school, but gave up two-sport dreaming when he enrolled in college, and then he was a two-way star in college, but had to give up hitting when he joined the Mets. I hope he doesn't have to give up starting and become a reliever anytime soon. Also, I hope the Mets have put together a plan for how to develop a prospect as a two-way player. Shohei Ohtani has revealed decades upon decades of conventional wisdom to be misguided, and I hope our team is quicker and smarter than the others at adapting.
Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2025 Posted August 15, 2025 I think I've seen him 3-4 times this year here in the Cuse. He's got the stuff. I am hopeful.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2025 Posted August 15, 2025 SNY announcing he will wear # 26.Later
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted August 15, 2025 Posted August 15, 2025 I guess that Terry Leach number retirement ceremony is never going to happen.
