Jason Heyward just released by San Diego [.176/.223/.271 in 95 PAs].

You wonder if that's it for him after 16 seasons even though still 'only' 35 y/o (36 in Aug)

Former Met Kevin Pillar and Freddy Galvis of the terrible Phillies has retired. Arturo Lopez, who pitched briefly in 2009, announced his retirement earlier this year after spending years in Mexico.

Michael Douglas, 80. Says he doesn't want to be one of those actors who drops dead on a set.

Not baseball, I know, but he played Ant Man! That has to count for something.

I hope Goldschmidt doesn't retire anytime soon. He's on the precipice of being a Hall of Famer and I want him to become a shoo-in (I think he's already done enough, but the voters might not).

Apart from Redd Foxx — who made the mistake of regularly including fake fatal heart attacks as part of his act — how many actors actually drop dead on a set?

Good answer.

Yeah, apart from accidents in action sequences, I would generally think a professional set is a safer place to be for a veteran actor than at home watching The Price Is Right.

Nick Ahmed, who somehow forged a 12-year career and won 2 Gold Gloves while remaining largely anonymous, has retired.

So has pitcher Jesse Chavez, who also quietly kept finding work year after year for nearly two decades.

Eddy Alvarez retired in late June.

No official announcements that I've heard about, but it just occurred to me that Anthony Rizzo isn't playing anywhere this season, major league or minor, after 14 ML seasons and 18 years after being drafted in the 6th round by the Red Sox. The Yanx bought out his option last winter at which point he became a FA. He turns 36 on Friday.

And today Anthony Rizzo officially retires.

He will become "an ambassador" for the Cubs.

They didn't say to which country.

(do the Cubs even have foreign embassies?)

Another one who was overhyped and pegged a future Hall of Famer within his first couple years, just to become "very good." That happens a lot these days. Kris Bryant, who can't have much left in the tank, is an even bigger example.

Rizzo won 4 GGs; I didn't realize he was that good defensively.

Also, Kyle McGowin, former Nats pitcher, retired in July.

I don't remember Rizzo ever being touted as a future Hall of Famer. He was a top-100 prospect prior to his call-up but nothing resembling a can't miss.

Plus anyone who touts anybody as a HoF early in a career should be ignored, or at least made to calm down for a few years. And by 'few' I mean at least eight.

Rizzo: 14 years, 4 Gold Gloves, 3 ASG, 4 years w/MVP votes (including a 4th place), 300+ HRs, 900+ Runs/RBIs, 828/123 career OPS/OPS+, one World Series, cancer survivor.

That's a very nice career with the only possible negative being that it petered out a bit early: done at age 34, last full/good year at 32.

And if some feel disappointed that he didn't live up to the hype then that's on them, not him.

He certainly has had a better career than Bryant. There's probably a better-than-even chance that Bryant has played his last, too.

Rizzo sat in the bleachers in his Cubs jersey after his announcement, publicly announcing his intention to enjoy an some adult beverages and contribute to a cup snake.

Those beverages quickly cost him, though, as he had a Cubs homer hit right to him in the second and he misplayed the ball.

Charlie Morton, 42 y/o in November and traded to Detroit at the trade deadline then released after 9 appearances, signed a contract with the Braves for the purpose of retiring with the team that drafted him in the 3rd round* of the 2002 draft out of a HS in Redding, CT. Morton pitched for seven teams over his 18 year career. He was 3rd in the CY race in 2019 for Tampa.

* Brian McCann = 2nd round, Jeff Francouer = 1st round of the same draft. The Mets, that year, drafted Scott Kazmir in Round 1 but lost their 2nd & 3rd round picks by signing FAs Crlos Gomez and David Westhers.

Freudian slip there? Roger Cedeno (not Gomez) was the outfielder signed as a free agent ahead of the 2002 season.

Surprised the no doubt member of the HOF Class of 2031, so far, Clayton Kershaw hasn’t been mentioned yet.

Will ride out the Dodger postseason run, then will bid adieu to his playing days.

Niuman Romero, who hadn't played in the majors since 2010, has announced his retirement. He'd been bouncing around winter ball this past decade.

Hector Sanchez has also retired.

Adeiny Hechavarria retired.
