metirish Old-Timey Member Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago Don Mattingly signs for two years with the Phillies , apparently there was talk he would not be back , but there you go whippoorwill 1
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted 6 hours ago Posted 6 hours ago There was certainly a populist movement, likely amounting to nothing, for the Yankees to sweep in and steal him away. Bill Madden, still bringing it at 80 years old, is out there banging the drum for the Yankees to bring back Buck Showalter.
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted 6 hours ago Posted 6 hours ago He was their second choice (again) after Alex Cora (again) told them “no, thanks.” Cora, of course. is making $7.25M a year (through the end of 2027) to not manage Boston.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted 6 hours ago Posted 6 hours ago Don Mattingly, God bless him, is to the Yankees what Wally Backman is to the Mets. He's never going to get the job, but until the day he dies, you're never going to stop hearing about him getting the job — and about how his not getting the job is a slap in the face to the real fans, and to the real team, as argued by guys who think they somehow speak for both. metirish 1
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted 6 hours ago Posted 6 hours ago Yeah, Cora effectively pre-rejected the Phils in advance of them talking to him and then took himself out of the running for all jobs by saying he would manage nowhere this year (kids in school and getting (re-) married this summer). As far as the rest of the league goes ... So all three -in-season interim managers were hired permanently (BoSox, Mets, Phils). A couple of more teams have balls in the air at this point. The Mariners are looking within their division by talking with Joe Espada so I guess Houston has moved on. Diamondbacks and Angels also aren't set for next season. Info from Cot's Contracts (arm of Baseball Prospectus) but they don't always have terms of the deal. Unlike player contracts, manager contracts aren't always made public.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted 6 hours ago Posted 6 hours ago Manager of the Rockies feels like the most anonymous job in baseball.

metirish Old-Timey Member Posted 5 hours ago Author Posted 5 hours ago Great spreadsheet, I feel like Kurt Suzuki is on a hiding to nothing with the Angels
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted 4 hours ago Posted 4 hours ago If this was a quiz, I would have been able to name less than half of the current MLB managers. Wow. I can probably still name everyone who appeared on a Topps manager card from the 1980s, though.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted 4 hours ago Posted 4 hours ago I wouldn't have been able to name any of the managers, other than the Mets, Yankees, and Phillies. There's a Torey Luvello and a Tony Vitello? Confusing!
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted 4 hours ago Posted 4 hours ago I remember when managers were named Sparky Anderson. Bill Virdon. Tom Lasorda. Tony Larussa. Jim Leyland. Bobby Cox. Dusty Baker. John McNamara. I don't know who most of these guys are. I'm clearly not paying attention anymore!
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted 4 hours ago Posted 4 hours ago Dave Roberts is someone we all should know, though. He's only 54 (looks at least 10 years older), but he's got over 1,000 wins and seems like a quiet cinch to make the all-time top five. Also revered by Red Sox fans for his part in the 2004 comeback. In 11 seasons, he has never won fewer than 91 games, except for the Covid year of 2020 in which his team put up a .717 winning percentage.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted 4 hours ago Posted 4 hours ago I know Terry Francona too, but didn't know he was in Cincinnati. I would have guessed that Skip Schumaker was still managing the Braves, but I see he's with the Rangers now. Craig Counsell managing the Cubs is something I did know about, but I wouldn't have been able to come up with his name if prompted.
