Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted October 2 Posted October 2 Saturday 10/3 [1 PM EDT on TBS] in a best-of-five to determine the best of the weak half of the AL bracket. For the White Sox, Hagen Smith -- a 22 y/o (LH) rookie with 18 G / 1 start under his belt -- gets the game one start. Somebody to follow quickly afterward most likely. vs Parker Messick, also a lefty, for the Guardians -- a 25 y/o statistical rookie (7 games in '25) and serious RoY candidate [32 GS, 186 IP, 2.56 ERA, 1.06 WHIP] Cleveland spends 162 games proving that they were (one game) better than the White Sox ... and now they get to do it all over again in a three-of-five matchup. Regular season: CLE (85 wins) 6 -- CHW 7 (84)

Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted October 3 Posted October 3 Neither of these teams are good enough to beat the Yankees in the next round.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted October 3 Author Posted October 3 Regular season 2026: CLE vs NYY: 2 - 4 CHW vs NYY: 3 - 4
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted October 4 Posted October 4 It’s funny how people are taking to Murakami. Sure. Ohtani is a generational talent. And he says all the right things and is the type of player you can teach your kids to emulate. But he’s very buttoned down. Kinda like Jeter in how presentable he always is. Tall. Fit. Multiple MVPs. And then there’s Murakami. He’s a little chubby. Runs funny. Hits nukes. Strikes out way too much. Yells “I am Japanese!!!” Drinks too much and talks about being hungover. Everyone seems to love him.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted October 4 Author Posted October 4 His personality is a bit reminiscent of Ji-Man Choi, the Korean 1B/DH the Rays had in 2022. Big, kinda round, animated, better athlete than he looked. And while you had no idea how much English Choi knew, he seemed to be one of the boys and all in on the jokes and the rest of the dugout silliness. Murakami had a down second half -- Mar/Apr - May - July (IL all of June) = 930-ish OPS; Aug - Sep = 647 & 704 -- so the jury is still out on him as far as what degree of star he'll be on this side of the Pacific Maybe that's just a slump, or maybe pitchers are getting a book on him. And of course a million Ks but lots of walks and power to go with it. Plus he 's still just 26 y/o and absolutely thumped the snot out of his HR in game 1 vs CLE. Good hair game too.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted October 5 Author Posted October 5 Anthony Kay (one time NYM 1st round draft pick) gets the Game 2 start for the ChiSox today and lasts three batters: 1B, BB, GO ... and he's gone! Even by opener standards that's a quick hook. New pitcher (Sean Newcombe) goes to a 2 - 0 count and the call from the dugout is for an IW. Next pitch is an infield chopper/error by Newcombe and it's 2 - 0 Guardians, still with one out in the 1st. Over-managing by White Sox / Venable?
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted October 5 Posted October 5 Murakami is new and on a now very popular team Ohtani had a weak year, for him, so you know..
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted October 5 Posted October 5 Rob Manfred is standing in an outfield bleacher with almost no one around him
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted October 5 Posted October 5 I've kinda liked the White Sox since Dick Allen played for them decades ago. I've followed them the last couple of years when they stunk 2022 Number 1 pick Colson Montgomery was pretty close to bust status heading into this season. He found his way at the MLB level and hit for power if not average surprising many. Miguel Vargas was a Dodger rookie 2022-23. I don't that anyone other than Mrs Vargas saw this breakout coming
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted October 5 Posted October 5 I did not know that Tommy Pham was on the White Sox postseason roster. 0-13 with 7 strikeouts and 1 walk this year with the Mets, a .000/.071/.000, negative 77 OPS+

They snuck him in just under the wire Quote 0-13 with 7 strikeouts and 1 walk this year with the Mets, a .000/.071/.000, negative 77 OPS+ Not that he was much better with the ChiSox; 3-for-17 with the only highlight being a 3R HR in his 2nd game there, against the Guardians of all teams.
whippoorwill Old-Timey Member Posted October 6 Posted October 6 Dang it I’m disappointed. Cmon Cleveland
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted October 6 Author Posted October 6 Guardians got handed two runs in the 1st then barely got a hit until the run-scoring double in bottom 8
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted October 7 Author Posted October 7 Every series is in action today and with only slightly staggered start times. CLE at CHW - where the White Sox are out to an early 1 - 0 lead (end of 2) as they look to close out the series the 6:00 time slot sees the Dodgers in Atlanta [series = 2 - 1 Dodgers] at 8:00 it'll be Rays in the Bronx w/the Yanx trying to save their season [0 - 2] and 10:00 EDT as the Brewers & Padres play on the left coast [2 - 1 Brewers]
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted October 7 Posted October 7 Cleveland leading 4-1, bottom of the third. Later
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted October 7 Posted October 7 7-3 Cleveland in the 9th. later whippoorwill 1
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted October 8 Author Posted October 8 So this is the only series left. They'll play tonight at 8 (EDT) in Chicago then wait until Saturday at 8 to play Game 5 in Cleveland if the Guardians win #4
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted October 8 Posted October 8 Tonight's game could be the last baseball until Sunday if the White Sox close it out Parker Messick takes the ball for Cleveland while Hagen Smith opens for the White Sox. Eric Fedde is listed as their primary reliever but that really doesn't mean much Jose Ramirez woke up last night. He could go along way to getting Cleveland to the next round 8pm
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted October 9 Posted October 9 Tommy Pham. One of the few 2026 Mets left standing. Him and Peralta yes?

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted October 9 Author Posted October 9 Parker Messick lasts just 4.1 & 2.1 innings in his two playoff starts: 6 H, 6 BB, and 4 R combined That's disappointing after such a good rookie season

ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted October 9 Posted October 9 Eric Fedde, was reconditioned in Korea ala Chris Flexen and others
