For an opening day starter, he didn't leave much of a mark.  His personality — at least the one that came across — wasn't much stronger than his stat line.  And a guy named Freddy with really impressive teeth should not lack for personality.  He should have showed up to camp driving The Mystery Machine.

The Mets always seemed to think handling him a little different would lead to a profound turning of the corner.  That seven inning start against Miami back in May sticks with me.  He struck out seven, but the Mets just kept falling further and further behind, and Miami was off to the races, turning their season around, while the Mets were jumping from the frying pan into the fire.

He had shiny Jeri Curl-type locks when he was in Milwaukee.  Maybe he should have stuck with that look.  Maybe it's a Sampson kind of deal.

I remember we gave up two solid prospects for this bum :-(

But he's not really a bum. I remember he started off very well with New York, just to collapse later on. Through mid-May, he had a 3.10 ERA. After that, his mark was 6.44 mark. I bet he just lost confidence.

I also always confused him with Wiley Peralta, who also pitched for the Brewers back in the day.

He had the chance to be the best pitcher on staff but only if he wasn't also asked to be a leader, seems like.

What the Mets needed this year was an Orel Hershiser type to tie everything together and take the pressure off.

Anyway, beat it, Freddy

I remember an interview from the spring where he talked about how he used to have all the guys over to his house after games to hang out, and I thought, "hey, maybe this team will have character after all."

I was wrong.

A major disappointment.  Never expected him to be a true "ace", but I expected him to front the Mets rotation and provide veteran leadership.  I can only guess as to whether or not he provided leadership, but he seldom provided the level of pitching I anticipated.
