Crochet is knitting together a good game (or is that purl?),

Still 1-0 in the 6th.

Boone leaves Fried in long enough to get the first (lefty) batter of the 7th.

Then he went to his pen (102 pitches).

Then things got messy: Walk - hustle Double - 2-RBI PH Single

2-1 BoSox, one out, runner on 1st.

Out goes Luke Weaver, in comes ... I dunno, somebody (Fernando Cruz ... come on down!).

Sox didn't add on in top 7, but then the Yanx, with Crochet still dealing, went 1-2-3 on six pitches in the bottom half.

2-1, heading to the 8th

Sox bring Crochet -- 100 pitches thru 7 and with 16 batters retired in a row -- back out for the 8th.

So far: GO - Single - K

... and now Cora pulls him after 117 pitches in favor of former-MFY Aroldis Chapman (lefty for lefty) with four outs to go and the tying run on 1st

Posted

Chapman allows runner (Volpe) to advance to 2nd on the 3rd pickoff attempt ... none of which were even close to getting him.

Hell, he threw as often to 1st as he did to home.

FO to RF (despite near collision) and we're going to the 9th.

YUGE two-out/two-strike double by Trevor Story makes it 3-1 in the 9th

(and this game is already heading towards the three-hour mark (about 2:50 right now) despite the new rules and a low score ... only the Yanx/Sawx universe could pull this off)

Top of the Yanx order: Goldschmidt - Judge - Bellinger, up in the 9th for NYY

Single for Goldschmidt - Judge as tying run.

Single by Judge on the first pitch. 1st & 2nd, no one out.

Chapman stays in for the lefty-swinging Bellinger.

Anotehr first-pitch single by Bellinger.

Bags loaded, no one out.

Tying run on 2nd. Winning run on 1st.

And still no pitching change.

Stanton up

I saw on the news that the MFYs limited direct ticket sales to the tri-state area (plus some available in PA) in order to keep the Boston fans from buying tickets. (Boston fans had to go through off market sellers)

I hope the fans they let in enjoyed the game.

There was at least some Crochet talk here over the winter. At the time he had just had his first season as a starter (CHW) with good results [32 GS, 3.58 / 1.07]

Prior to that he had either been a reliever or injured (missed all of '22 plus most of '23) so there was a lot of caution about if/how much to give up for such a small, even if promising, track record and two years of team control.

Boston took the bait and went all in by not only giving up four prospects in a trade but then, after just one start, went straight to a $170mil/six year extension (starts in '26) with clauses that kick those numbers even higher based on MVP votes. Not sure what kind of MVP votes he'll get this year but he's probably behind only Skubal in CY voting and could win it himself.

So, so far, that move has paid off in spades [32 starts; 18-5; 2.32 / 1.03; led league in IP, K, batters faced, & K/9 (11.2)] and, with Crochet still just 26 y/o and signed thru 2031, if things continue along a path even slightly like this past year Hub fans won't care how well the prospects sent along do.

I actually watched this whole game , I did think pulling Max Fried was a dodgy move, he was great, anyway , glad it all worked out

4-3 Yanx, top 9th, David Bednar on to ty and close it out (and save the Yanx season).

6 - 7 - 8 up for the Sawx

Wilyer Abreu: K

Jarren Duran: K, looking

Cedanne Rafaela: FO - 9

And at least three of the first round games are going to the third game.

Dodgers romp as the Cincy pitching, which gave up just 30 runs over their final 12 games, coughs up 10 & 8 in these two.

That there are only three games left shifts the start times today to 3:08 (CLE/DET - cuz the midwest teams always get the worst slot); 6:08 (CHC/SDP); 9:08 (NYY/BOS)

and changes the CLE/DET game to ABC and the other two to ESPN

I like to think the Mets would have put up more of a fight against LA but what do I know
