Good news: The Mets got into the Cubs' pen early in Game One, which always bodes well for a team as a series unfolds.

In a role reversal, the Mets start the promising rookie pitcher, while the Cubs start a veteran lefty who started out great but has been fading of late.



Matthew Boyd. 13-8, with a 3.20 ERA, 1.11 WHIP.



Bad News: Has been lights out at home. 11-1, 2.45 ERA, 0.925 WHIP.



Good News: He hasn't been as effective in the second half. 4.74 ERA, 1.245 WHIP. His three starts in September are even worse. 6.00 ERA, 1.533 WHIP. He's at 174.1 IP, after pitching only 21 innings in 2024, and 71 innings in 2023. So he, like Peterson, may have hit the wall.



Despite the role reversal, the pitching matchup isn't lopsided like last night. Boyd, though fading, hasn't been nearly as bad as Peterson. And Tong, while promising, hasn't had nearly the success as Horton.

They probably will not ask two innings of him, but I hope they will not write him off as unavailable.



The only guys they did not use last evening were Ryan Helsley and Dickie Lovelady. I imagine somebody else gets added before game time.

Well, they made it to .500, which is always a benchmark. Last year was such a fun year. It had character, it had excitement. It was awesome. This year was one of blasé ennui...but if they can make these last few games exciting, then one might forget the drag of the season before them.

As Gary said often last year, 'even if he's not hitting, Tyrone Taylor does something with his glove, arm, legs, to help you win games almost every day'.



Now this season he has hit even less and been available to run/hit/field/throw much less often ... but it's good to get this kind of reminder.
