"I'd like to review that play, and furthermore, I'd like to review my decision not to put in a pinch-runner before that play."

But who?

If Acuna is on the roster would putting him in the PR make a difference? Quite possibly, yes.

But I don't know if anyone currently on the bench would have made a difference.

I approved of the send but it was just a very good throw.

Isn't Taylor faster than Acuna?

Acuña is the fastest in sprint speed on the team, https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/leaderboard/sprint_speed?min_season=2025&max_season=2025&position=&team=121&min=10as measured by Statcast. Taylor is #2.

Marte is shown as #11. A couple of caveats on that:

  • I question that the data is really there on him, as I find it hard to believe that all three catchers are ahead of him, as the data suggests. Maybe he just doesn't run hard on grounders, to save his legs, and so they haven't got a good read or something.

  • Seeing McNeil, Soto, and Mauricio also behind him and the three catchers tells me that there is a fly in the ointment somewhere.

  • Sprint speed measures your running in a straight line, not cutting for an extra base, where it can be argued (not necessarily accurately) that a guy like Starling Marte really kicks in his burners.

That said, there certainly seems to be enough there to suggest Taylor is your man. The three feet per second difference may not be accurate, but it is three feet.

…and it's two outs in the 9th inning and that's the tying run.

You might not make the substitution in the 7th or 8th, since you're going to need another player to hit in that spot in the order if it comes up again. But when it is literally a score-here-or-you-lose moment, you use the best weapons you have.

Losers of 9 of the last 10 games , unacceptable, Gelbs keeps banging on( and has for a good while ) about how this offense is too good for this , so annoying

It is irritating to listen to, over and over, but what if he's right? There's some explanation for the chasm between the team's offensive ability and their performance on the field, but what if that explanation is "bad luck"? That's usually the best explanation of poor hitting with RISP, and it eventually comes to an end, most of the time. The team starts driving in key runs again, and the bitching about shitty RISP hitting lowers in volume and in frequency, until the next streak of really bad luck.

More popular explanations include bad managing (and there are so many managerial decisions that you can always find a few every game that rub you wrong), weak character by a player you happen to dislike for a variety of reasons (most of them irrational), a bad attitude on a lot of the players' parts (which is another form of "bad managing"), and other explanations that amount to grousing and complaining about results.

Every team has some gap between its potential and its performance, most of them small, some positive and some negative. But every once in a while, you get a huge gap and sometimes that huge gap is negative. (When the huge gap is positive, we call it a "miracle team" and we eat it up.) Fans get unhappy when a negative gap happens to their team, but a streak of bad luck is unavoidable over the long haul. And we're in it right now.

The offense has been bad over the long haul. It's not some bad stretch. I posted in the other thread. They've been bad all year, all of 2023 and the first two months of 2024.

This is not a “rough patch”. The good stretch in 2024 is the outlier.

Don't misquote me. I said Vientos has shown that he can hit in but that he hasn't done so this year.

Anyway, you're not alone in the “hope these guys can figure it out” camp. You have David Stearns in agreement with that plan too.

I don't think the explanation is bad luck, but I certainly think you can have good personnel and still struggle because of your philosophy and approach. I find it less edifying to ask Why is that guy still in the lineup? than Why is that guy still doing things the way he does?

But yeah, I would have pinch-run Taylor for Marte. I probably would have done so even if Marte was a my last catcher. I suspect it didn't go down that way because Mendoza didn't want to disrespect a respected MLB vet and the active league leader in stolen bases. He may well read the risk:reward ratio differently, and see the potential damage to clubhouse/manager relations and morale not worth the marginal increase that he would get in the moment. He, of course, did not know increase would be the difference in the game, but he well knew it could be.

Maybe, in some way, he is right about that. I am not good at organizational psychology, but I respect that. Casey Stengel, though, had a very compelling attitude toward loyalty. He didn't see sticking with a guy who is important to the team, but isn't currently getting it done — or isn't the best option in a situation — as the way to express loyalty to his players. He thought giving his team the best chance to win was the best way to do so, and if that sucked for one guy, he has to be an adult and realize that it was best for 25 guys.

Anyhow, getting two runs on two solo homers tells me to re-think my team's philosophy, not their personnel.

Totally with you on pinch-running Taylor for Marte, but that's just one decision in a game their offense was woeful in, not a real explanation for their offensive problems. Generally, I think Mendoza's done a decent job as manager, and as I say, you're bound to disagree with any manager sometimes. If McNeil had popped a double in the gap and Marte had scored easily, we'd all have forgotten about that choice by now. We might even be happy that Marte was still batting in a tied game.

If they were simply an unlucky team so far (grant me that premise for a moment) some folks would still be casting about for a more satisfying explanation, wouldn't they? It's a tough thing to do, accepting "Bad luck" as an explanation, but it's got to be the truth sometimes. Maybe this is just one of those times.
