Mets lookiing to Even It Up vs Guardians - 8/5/25 IGT

The Mets fell to the Guardians in the 10th inning last night to drop the first game of the series with Cleveland. The Mets will turn to right hander Clay Holmes in hopes he can right the ship. The team desperately needs someone other than David Peterson to pitch 6 effective innings in a start. Time to step up and get the job done. Speaking of getting the job done, it would be great if the offense could break out and score some runs. A rare inning here and there just isn't what is expected from this line up. An early lead would help the cause greatly.

In some regards, the Mets have done a lot better that you'd expect considering their offense.



Their primary catcher, Torrens, was pulled off the trash heap last year and is hitting . 216/.284/.307 this year.



Second base has been a hodgepodge and their primary 2B, per Baseball Reference, is Luisangel Acuna, who has been anemic with the bat (239/.295/.283).



Third base has been a hodgepodge and their primary 3B, Mark Vientos, is hitting .232/.281/.368.



Their primary centerfielder, Tyrone Taylor, is hitting .199/.254/.290.



So we have four "primaries" with OBPs under .300 and the team is still in playoff contention.



Taylor should probably be gotten rid of altogether—how much worse would McNeil be at this point?

Every time my young self saw that Heart video, I would misinterpret the opening. It would scan past a few longhair, brooding faces, then a few more, then a few more still, and I would think "Man, Heart has a lot of people in the band these day."



When the pan would finally get to the stage, I would have my mistakes clarified for me, but instantly begin wondering when Peter Frampton joined Heart, before realizing only through several shots and the process of elimination that I was mistaking Nancy Wilson for him.

Vientos: 303 PA, .281 OBP

Taylor: 298 PA, .254 OBP

Baty: 293 PA, .291 OBP

Torrens: 218 PA, .284 OBP

Acuna: 175 PA, .295 OBP

Taylor should probably be gotten rid of altogether—how much worse would McNeil be at this point?

McNeil plays everyday already. Dumping Taylor in favor of Acuna is a possibility but doesn't do much for the offense. They could bring up one of the farmhands in Syracuse — a Joey Meneses, a Gilberto Celestino — but they're not exactly top prospects.



Maybe it's time to think seriously about a promotion directly from Binghamton, as was done with Conforto in 2015.

I don't know how healthy Jett Williams' wheels are, but if he can give you something like the Taylor defense, he can presumably provide the righthandedness, the pinch-running, and the ability to hit like a good AA hitter that Taylor is currently offering, and presumably his batting eye is ready to perform at this level, even if his bat itself is not. That might look good alongside those sub-.300 OBPs.



And presumably as well, he gives you something like the Acuña versatility. Also, unlike his fellow Bingo outfielder prospects, he has been to AAA. So yeah, I can get behind that.

I remember when hard balls through the box were generally hits. Not in todays game with the off side infielder shifting so far toward the middle that instead it is often an out. In this case, an inning ending DP.
