Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted June 19, 2025 Posted June 19, 2025 No, I don't want to talk about this yet. It's not until July 13 - 14 anyway. But seeing as how mlb.com has a 1st round mock up, I just want to take note of the list of first names of guys projected to be selected just in the first 27 picks.Over half have names I bet you haven't used in the last week ... or quite possibly ever.KadeAivaKysonKaysonJoJoGavin (2 of them)SteeleWehiwaMarekJaceGageKruzSlaterAs far as I know, none of Kyson, Kayson, Kade, or Kruz are related to Roger ClemensBut at least none of these guys are likely to wind up on the Mets as the payroll situation pushes their 1st pick to somewhere around #567 overall. And btw, the guy Kruz, is Kruz Schoolcraft, a LH pitcher out of an Oregon HS
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted June 19, 2025 Posted June 19, 2025 Mets have their first pick knocked back a bunch of slots — they pick like 38th or something — and they have the second-lowest bonus pool, after the Yanks.Billionaires like market restrictions to protect themselves from each other, just not to protect the rest of us from them.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2025 Author Posted July 13, 2025 So here's my first question from this draft: How did the White Sox, who had one of the worst MLB seasons EVER wind up with the 10th pick of the draft? With a season that bad they should have been awarded the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th picks. But, instead, the Nationals, who previously struck oil like Jed Clampett when their back-to-back #1 overall picks were in years when all-time no-brainers Bryce Harper and Steven Strasburg were available, wind up here with the #1 overall although I'm not sure why.1) Nats - Eli Willits, SS, Florida HS (still just 17 y/o)2) Angels - Tyler Bremner, RHP UC Santa Barbara3) Mariners: Kade Anderson, LHP, LSU4) Rox: Ethan Holliday, SS/3B, Stillwater, OK HS* 5) Cards: Liam Doyle, LHP, U Tennessee6) Pirates: Seth Hernandez, RHP, Corona HS, (CA)7) Marlins: Avia Arquette, SS, Oregon State8) Blue Jays: JoJo (he thought he was a woman) Parker, SS, Miss HS9) Reds: Steele Hall, SS, Alabama HS10) White Sox: Billy Carlson, SS, Corona HS (CA) (I'm betting that school had a pretty good team this past year)This is still going on but I won't.The first 105 picks (Rounds 1, 2, 3, plus the 'Competitive Balance' and compensation picks) will be made tonight.Due to the length and dollar amount of the Juan Soto FA contract, the Mets first pick will be in Round 14 of the 2037 draft (OK, it'll actually be picks 38 and 102)Rounds 4 thru 20 will be made tomorrow.* So expected history was NOT made by brothers both getting selected #1 overall in different drafts (Jackson was 1/1 by the O's in 2022). The record remains with BJ (#2 - 2002, TBR) and Justin Upton (#1 - 2005, ARZ) with honorable mention to Tom (6th overall, 1966) and (son) Ben Grieve (2nd, 1994)
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2025 Posted July 13, 2025 I really really question taking a high school guy first. So far away from MLB. The college guys have large ceilings also and better floorsIt's hard to generate mainstream interest in this, none of these picks make an immediate impact like NFL and NBA
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2025 Posted July 13, 2025 Looks like we picked Michigan 2B Mitch Voit

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 13, 2025 Posted July 13, 2025 Second year in a row the Mets grab a two-way guy in order to make him a one-way guy.Sooner or later, somebody is going to be the home-grown Ohtani.Kinda looks like he partied with Prince.https://images.sidearmdev.com/crop?url=https:%2F%2Fdxbhsrqyrr690.cloudfront.net%2Fsidearm.nextgen.sites%2Fmgoblue.com%2Fimages%2F2023%2F11%2F3%2F2023113-bsb-voit.jpg&width=180&height=270>

(He's listed at 5'9".) They have a string going of drafting short players high (Williams and Morabito are both listed at 5'9"). What ever happened to "Kids are getting bigger these days?" The player many draftniks had them taking (and I wanted them to get), a power hitting outfielder from the U of Oregon, was taken by the Orioles with the pick before Voit. With pick 102, the Mets selected Antonio Jimenez, SS, Central Florida, and I have no idea how big he is. But he seems to have good potential:https://ucfknights.com/news/2025/07/14/jimenez-selected-by-mets-in-third-round-of-2025-mlb-drafthttps://ucfknights.com/news/2025/07/14/jimenez-selected-by-mets-in-third-round-of-2025-mlb-draftLater

Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2025 Posted July 14, 2025 We selecetd a 6-5 high school RHP, Peter Kussow, in round 4Wisconsin's best prospect this year, Kussow flies under the radar more than he should. Like a lot of prep pitchers from cold-weather states, he lacks consistency, but he also looks like he belongs in the third round on his best days. He has the makings of a promising three-pitch repertoire and a projectable 6-foot-5 frame.Kussow works with a low-90s fastball that tops out at 97 mph with some carry and armside run. He can overpower hitters with a high-spin slider that climbs as high as 88 mph with two-plane break. He hasn't needed to use it much, but his mid-80s changeup has encouraging fade and depth.Kussow's size and ability to get down the mound well create a low release point and extension that make it difficult for hitters to pick up his pitches. He doesn't have the smoothest delivery, which further adds to his deception, though it also can compromise his ability to throw strikes. If he doesn't turn pro this summer, he could become one of the best college pitchers in the 2028 class after three years at Louisville.
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2025 Posted July 14, 2025 Round 5 is a college reliever who had Tommy John last week, Payton Prescott.Mets are obviously saving their bullets here.

Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2025 Posted July 14, 2025 Round 8 is Camden Lohman, a lanky high school pitcher from Missouri. This so far is the only guy they picked whose MLB prospect ranking is lower than the selection (pick 253, ranked 220 by MLB)
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2025 Posted July 14, 2025 Ninth-rounder Anthony Frobose is a Rutgers commit from Yorktown Heights, N.Y. Shortstop and pitcher.

The ChiSox drafted 5th last year. I assume this means that their top pick in next year's draft will be slotted on merit which, at the moment, puts them better than only Colorado, 9.5 games better.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2025 Posted July 14, 2025 In the last couple of years, it seemed that immediately after the draft, some of the draftees popped up on organization's top 30 prospect lists, some in the top 10.I wonder if any of these guys will make those lists, and if they do , how highly will they be ranked.I'd like them draft a slugging outfielder who doesn't have to stand on his tip toes when he orders at the McDonald's counter.Later
