This is less than timely, but the passing of Seymour Wiener reminds me that 2024 was perhaps the memiest Mets season in memory. The early season gave us a goofy guy in pimping clothes to coalesce around when the team couldn't yet find itself, A large, shake-endorsing McDonaldland moster became the weird and uliekly symbol of the team's turnaround, and they road an internet abbreviation/autotuned Latin pop hit deep into the playoffs.

I tend to rank them this way, but I admit I slept through much of Seymour's run. I am also probably missing one or two items that were briefly big tickets.

1) OMG

2) Grimace

3) Mets Pimp

4) Iggy the Mets Dog

5) Seymour Weiner

I don't remember Iggy or Seymour at all, and the Mets pimp didn't seem to endure the way Grimace and OMG did. I also recall that Pete Alonso tried to play up a pumpkin that he bought in Milwaukee, but that didn't really become a thing.

It's really a battle between OMG and Grimace. They're the ones who made the tabloid covers, for one thing.

Indeed, that is why I rank 'em as I have.

I do not recall the pumpkin thing. It is all about the learning.

Grimace was a marketing home run but it basically killed off any mischievous remnants of the classic Mr Met, who's become a dancing cheerleader today.

I think OMG was a genuine moment the players really responded to, and that energized the fans. Grimace might well return -- McDonald's had ads on the ribbon board I noticed-- but OMG has come and gone, like Seymour

Unless we reacquire Iglesias which seems a smart move, especially if he's lingering unused on someone's bench or minor league system. Where is he, anyhow?

Seymour (RIP) predated the 2024 vibes being immaculate. The modest stir his name caused was in Bench Mob territory. People went social media crazy for Patrick Mazeika's goggles, too.

SNY caught a fan brandishing a stuffed Grimace during a rally last night. Could have been Homer the Beagle.
