This player, a right-handed pitcher born in Cuba in 1993, had a brief but memorable stint with the New York Mets during the 2022 MLB season. Though he appeared in only eight games for the team, this player made headlines for a retaliatory pitch that sparked controversy, leading to a three-game suspension and fine. This player originally defected from Cuba in 2014 and was signed by the Arizona Diamondbacks for a record $8.27 million in 2015. This player, born October 24, 1973, in Fredericksburg, Virginia, was a left-handed relief pitcher who played in Major League Baseball from 2000 to 2005. After a standout debut season in 1992 in the minors (going 8-0 with a 1.35 ERA), he eventually broke into the majors with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2000. This player also pitched for the Milwaukee Brewers, San Diego Padres, Cincinnati Reds, and finally, the New York Mets.



His MLB career was that of a journeyman reliever—solid at times, but largely unremarkable. With a career record of 14–10 and a 4.54 ERA, this player never quite lived up to the promise of his early years. By the time he reached New York in 2005, fans and commentators agreed his best days were behind him. He was designated for assignment shortly after a rough start to the season and finished his career without returning to the majors.



Though largely forgotten today, this player left brief impressions on fans—some remembering a promising start with the Cardinals, others noting an autographed card or a final spring training that hinted at a comeback that never materialized. Ultimately, his acquisition by the Mets was considered puzzling, and he quietly exited the game, a typical case of a once-promising pitcher unable to sustain a foothold in the majors.

Oh that's Dicky Gonzalez. I so deluded myself into thinking he was going to be the bomb, I went to his MLB debut so as to say I was there when it all started.
