MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2024 Posted December 10, 2024 was supposed to have started today at 2PM EST but I haven't seen any news yet. If you have a link to the draft results, please post it.Later
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 10, 2024 Posted December 10, 2024 The Rule V is tomorrow at two.Today is a lottery for the top picks in the Amateur Draft — a rather silly staged event.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2024 Author Posted December 10, 2024 That's what I originally thought. But this site had it listed for today.https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10146595-mlb-rule-5-draft-2024-date-start-time-format-and-top-prospectshttps://bleacherreport.com/articles/10146595-mlb-rule-5-draft-2024-date-start-time-format-and-top-prospectsSilly me, believing everything I read on the internet.Thanks.Later
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 10, 2024 Posted December 10, 2024 The Nats get the top pick — from a lottery that MLB assures me includes more teams than any other sport!!
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2024 Posted December 11, 2024 Phillies pick off Mike Vasil.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 11, 2024 Posted December 11, 2024 Lavender and Vasil were two of my favorite fragrances from Yankee Candle.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2024 Posted December 11, 2024 And he'll be easy for the Rays to keep, because they can stash him on the 60-day injured list for the entire season.Vasil is another story. I suspect he'll suck and the Phillies will send him back.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 11, 2024 Posted December 11, 2024 I imagine that, having missed most of 2024, he's going to be a challenge for the Rays to keep on the roster all season.
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2024 Posted December 11, 2024 I'd have liked the Mets to re-select Rocky Cherry and make him honorary bullpen coach or something
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2024 Posted December 11, 2024 He sounds like he'd be a great ice cream flavor.

G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2024 Posted December 11, 2024 Phils trade Vasil to Rays for cash.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2024 Posted December 11, 2024 Phillies gave up on him even sooner than I predicted!

A Boy Named Seo Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2024 Posted December 11, 2024 If I'm counting right, it looks like the Mets lost 7 pitchers, a catcher and shortstop today, including the minor league phase. They only added AA righty Michael Hobbs from the Dodgers. On one hand, it's good the farm had so many prospects worthy of picking. On the other hand, it sucks the farm had so many prospects worthy of picking.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 11, 2024 Posted December 11, 2024 Imma guessing the Rays aren't planning a big season.
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2024 Posted December 11, 2024 It wasn't that long ago that Vasil was highly regarded, so I'm more than a little surprised he was left unprotected. At the very least, I would have traded him before I just let him go. Yeah he struggled at AAA last year, but so did Brandon Sproat. And José Buttó had a 5.93 ERA at Syracuse in 2023. Don't assume he can't stick in the Rays' pen for a full season.

In Triple A last season, Vasil had a 6.04 ERA in 134 innings (27 starts). The Rays can stash Lavender, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery, on the 60-day injured list, provided they keep him on their 40-man roster until spring training.“You never want to lose any player in a Rule 5 draft,” Stearns said. “We simultaneously wish them well and also hope to get them back.”If Vasil (this year) and Lavender (next year upon his return) can't stick on the major-league roster for their respective teams, they have to be offered back to the Mets.If I'm reading this correctly, it sounds like Tampa Bay would have to keep Lavender on their roster throughout the 2026 season? (This is how I'm interpreting the "this year" for Vasil and "next year" for Lavender.)

(This is how I'm interpreting the "this year" for Vasil and "next year" for Lavender.)The wording is confusing. I think next year still means ‘25 for Lavender. He had surgery in May of ‘24 and can probably pitch again sometime in the second half. So presumably the Rays can stash him on the IL until he's healthy, then move him back to the 40-man if they have room this summer. But I honestly don't know.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 11, 2024 Posted December 11, 2024 Yeah, I'd be pretty pissed if I was the Mets and the Rays got to keep the guy by stashing him on the IL all year.
Bob Alpacadaca Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2024 Posted December 11, 2024 I remember the Mets lost a Rule 5 pitcher to the Red Sox a while back and the Sox kept him on the IL most of the season claiming he had “blisters” and the Mets started beefing about it. Can't for the life of me remember the players name - which means he must not have panned out.
Zach Thornton Syracuse Mets - AAA LHP On Sunday, the southpaw tossed five shutout innings as the bulk pitcher. He gave up 2 hits, walked 2 and had 5 strikeouts. Explore Zach Thornton News >
