For perhaps the last time ever, the Mets host the Oakland Athletics for a series. The Mets are starting Paul Blackburn, who has been a dependable edition since coming over from these very same A's. The A's aren't sure who they will start. Manager Connie Mack has only indicated that Lefty Grove is unavailable.

The A's are coming off a victory over Toronto in a three-game series, culminating in a game-three victory where they beat the pants off of Chris Bassitt, a previous transfer from the Athletics to the Mets, sort of making him the Paul Blackburn of the Showalter Era.

The A's boast of a roster that includes former Met minor-league castoff Michel Otañez in the bullpen, Mike Cameron's son Daz in the outfield, and a catcher named Shea. Manager Mark Scott prefers you pronounce his name in Pig Latin.

A's are still 19 games under .500 but 20-13 in July/August. Much of that came at the expense of the

Angels (8-1 during that span) but beating LAA is something the Mets couldn't figure out how to do.

Vientos has been spending some quality time with the bench.

He has some kind of "ankle injury", but I haven't seen anything more specific than that.

Vientos is supposedly available off the bench and will start mañana.

The Mets are hitting like they bought their bats at ACME Corporation.

Boyle hadn't thrown a strike yet this inning, and when he finally did, Iglesias was ready to turn it around.

Since the one good offensive outburst of the entire road tripe (the final game in Denver) the Mets have been out-scored 29-2

I demand a recount.

How did this offense score two runs?
